All this talk of Carabou cup quarter finals has reminded me of the last one we played in all the way back in 1989. I was just 25 years of age. Bradford City away and we beat them 1-0 on the night after scoring very early. What an atmosphere that was, 90 minutes of Red Army being chanted, for those who were there, me and a mate were stood on a terrace barrier for 90 mins with a green and white quarter checked BCFC flag, we were very visible on the TV. What an atmosphere that night was, up with the the best away games ever for me, only the last 10 minutes of the Mansfield win against the odds compares and of course the Liverpool win. How many of our posters were at the game that night?
My favourite away atmostphere, what a great question, I'm going to be boring, when we beat Arsenal with the great goal from Cheesley, the journey on the way up, we went by car, we overtook coach after coach decked out with City colours, I can't explain inside the stadium, it was great and did we stick it into the imperial Arsenal fans they were sick as pigs. Then there was our day at Liverpool when the great Tinman turned our fortunes around, I have still got a sore throat, I have got to say how great the scouse fans were, they applauded our team and joined in the cheering , there are others but I will take those two with me where ever I end up.. Up the City..
I quite enjoyed our last away game last season at Brighton - all the City fans were celebrating the win and it really pissed on Brighton’s promotion party!
Ha Ha , went to both of those....Coach up against Arsenal, nearly had my head smashed in on the way out.....Thank god for Red & White colours...sneaking out, keeping my Bristolian accent mouth firmly shut!! Went up by Mini bus for the Liverpool game.....couple of crates of beer was drunk before we got to Gloucester!! The atmosphere in the ground at the final whistle, I will never forget for the rest of my life!! Happy days!
Agree with both of those , was there for both , amazing memories . Another one for me that matches them was at change Coventry, from memory needed a draw to stay up, went 2-0 down , managed to get back to 2-2 , remember Sir Gerry scored one can't remember who scored the other, a draw meant Coventry stayed up too, game was late starting due to large crowd , score of Sunderland game came over tannoy meaning they were relegated while both us and Coventry would stay up, last 10 mins the 2 sides took it in turns to play keep ball, went up by coach remember crouching down behind wall after the game to avoid bricks that were thrown at us , was only a young un at the time . Oh happy memories.
Liverpool away for me. Back then we each took it in turns to drive and it fell on me not to be the designated driver that night. We was pissed by the time we hit the first services. In the ground it was mental looking at the famous Kop and out singing them. After the game some Liverpool fans chatting told me only a few clubs in his time supporting Liverpool out sang the Kop. It was us and unfortunately I have to say this but the Sags a few seasons before. So they praised Bristol as a whole. Went to many away games, used to love the Hawthorns away.
Agree with the Coventry game. Was 22 at the time and four of us went up by car. Several times on the way we were asked by passers by who United (!!!!) were playing because there was, literally, an army en route up there. I think that was the reason why the start of the game was delayed; the powers that be thought there would be a safety issue trying to rush all the away supporters into the ground. I don't know about the bricks Ashton; my over-riding memory outside the ground at the end was rival fans hugging each other because both teams were staying up!!
I went to the match on a coach from the Rising Sun. Interesting pre match with rival fans jousting with chairs. Charlton 2008 is a favourite. Several hundred City in London six hours before a evening game led to a turbo (cider) charged atmosphere. Numerous evening London games have been similar but that one sits at the top as being near riotous without becoming violent.
I was right by it we were on the Maypole flyer from Hanhan that day. A young kid had his arm ripped open by a German Shepard horrible.
The Hartlepool Play Off Semi at the Gate was also an amazing atmosphere, as was our last LC Semi in some of the worst conditions imaginable. And the home game against Sheff Utd in the days when it was promotion/relegation play offs We won 1-0 (Walshie) and then drew 1-1 at Bramall Lane to relegate them before we lost the final to either Brentford or Walsall. Walsall I think...
Saw us play Spurs 1971 League cup semi final first leg. 30,002 inside AG that night which wouldn't be allowed now. When we went 1-0 up, atmosphere was electric and everyone really was dreaming of Wembley and possibly a win as the other finalists that year were Aston Villa, then a Division 3 (league 1) side. It has caused some concern as it was only top flight clubs that were allowed in Europe and there was the very real possibility that it could be a Div 2 side v a Div 3 at Wembley. As it turned out, we finished 1-1 on the night and drew away 0-0 only to be beaten 2-0 in extra time. Such was the lack of info in those days, I didn't know the result until my Dad came home the following evening from work with the Evening post. Spurs went on to beat Villa in the final.
We beat Sheffield Utd like you said. Lost to Walsall at home and had to turn round a big aggregate loss but got th3 goals to draw the ties. Drew the replay as far as I remember and lost on penalties.
Nearly 50 years ago loved standing on Swindon's Town End. Coventry, Arsenal, Liverpool were all fantastic. More recently for the most crazy 5 minutes - Mansfield.
Lost 3-1 to Walsall at home won the second leg away 2-0, lost the penalty shoot out to decide the venue for the replay lost the away replay 4-0 with Shutt being sent off for punching their keeper. I was at all three games
