We can't have 3 strikers on the bench when we're playing 4-5-1 from start...... McLean for his energy Adebola for his supposed target skills Simpson for his.......(put any optional word) Edit: Adebola win as many air battles" as he loses anyway. That's supposed to be his strength along with holding up the ball
True. But Nigel doesn't seem to fancy Homer that much, so he would hardly start with him as a lonely striker
I personally would drop Barmby from the bench, imo, he hasn't made any major impact in his cameos like he did last season. I'd start with Fryatt and McLean, McLean gets into really dangerous positions and gives it his all, I like him. And if we need a change have Adebola and Simpson on the bench.
All four strikers should be making the squad of 16, as we shouldn't be playing one striker in the first place. Simpson and McLean can play out wide if necessary, too. From his small run of form last season we all know what Simmo can do.. It's just that we don't give him more than 2 minutes a match, either that or he doesn't even make the bench. It seems like Pearson's mindset is: Fryatt misses 5 one-on-ones - ah, he'll score eventually he's just unlucky. Simpson misses 1 chance - useless. I'll drop him beyond the bench. I'm not saying I want Matt dropped or that he's a bad player, I'm just saying it should at least be a possibility. This is why I don't like managers signing their former players, they favour them far too much.
I am loath to criticise professional footballers as I know that they give their all but some have 'got it' and others don't. Fryatt has got 'a little' and the rest have nothing at this level. We have not attracted the players we need for top half football in this league so I can't see the point in moaning about it. I am dusting off another Didgeridoo!
I think I may as well give up my signature now! Doesn't look like Simmo's even gonna get a chance in the first team!
It's not his fault mate but he is out of his depth. Same as Altidore. Fryatt was well above average in League 1 but slightly below average in this league. The same could be said for McLean whilst Adebola's best is well behind him. We have a huge problem up front and I am sure Management have looked to bringing in loan-ee's but the trouble is they don't want to come. It will take someone with a bit of charisma to entice quality players here.
For me, Simpson isn't good enough regardless of lack of supply. When he has it I don't have any confidence he will take it by anyone or lay it to others or finish a chance.
Now that we can only have five on the bench Simpson has been squeezed out. He was finding a bit of form last year around Christmas in his link up play with Cam Stewart (Sheff U away in particular springs to mind) but we then went and splashed £2.5m on Fryatt and Mclean. Since then he has always behind these two in the pecking order and I feel NP doesn't rate him. Reckon we might well use him in a swap for a bigger target man.
stupid, we need goals yet Adebola included, the useless unit, yet Simpson, much more likely to score, not included, interesting thats all ill say.
Would like too see Simpson given a few games ahead of Mclean and Adebola. He's far more likely to score goals.
His face obviously doesn't fit so I don't think there is even a debate to be had on why Simmo isn't playing
It's a bit harsh to question his quality when he hasn't really missed that many opportunities, considering Fryatts chance-to-goal ratio. Don't think he really fits in with our style of play, I've always expected him to come good, his record proves he can be. Maybe if NP changes his style like he says he's considering, he'll fit in better. If not, goodbye in January
Apart from a few fleeting glimpses of what Simpson could do, I agree with OLM in that he'll be shipped out as soon as it's possible. I feel sorry for him really. I've seen some, in my view, harsh comments about his ability and attitude. Whilst hindsight is a great thing, and perhaps because he wasn't fit when he arrived, he's never seemed to settle in, had any luck or be part of the plan. A fresh start may suit him anyway.
I have to agree with this. I like them both, but it's clear that Simpson was dropped since the Macc game for missing a sitter in each of the first two games, but Fryatt missed 3 or 4 in both of those games and he stayed in the team. I like them both and I'm not saying Fryatt should be dropped or anything, but it does seem a little harsh on Jay. It's a long season and I'm sure we'll need him at some point. If he does go we will need to see another one come in.
