Club has released a statement on the club website confirming the club is officially up for sale.

Can only be good news and mean there is some genuine interest out there at present:
    https://www.nufc.co.uk/news/latest-news/statement-from-st-james-holdings-limited

"As a result of increasing press speculation regarding the future of Newcastle United, the owner of the club, St. James Holdings Limited, wishes to clarify its intentions.

As one of the Premier League's oldest and best supported football clubs - and for the benefit of its many fans and supporters in the UK and across the world - Newcastle United requires a clear direction and a path to a bright and successful future.

To give the club the best possible opportunity of securing the positioning and investment necessary to take it to the next level, at what is an important time in its history, its present ownership has determined that it is in the best interests of Newcastle United and its fans for the club to be put up for sale.

To give an incoming owner the maximum possible flexibility to make meaningful investment in the club, including in its playing squad, the sale process will give interested parties the opportunity of deferring substantial payments.

A process will now commence of identifying new ownership for the club that will be capable of delivering the sustained investment in and dedication to the club that is necessary for it to achieve its ambitions."

Beat me to posting this. Good news as far as I can see. We've had a good enough start to the Premiership and we must be regarded as a worthwhile investment.

Let's hope there are worthy bidders who are sensible people and interested in football.

Don't know why the timing is all of a sudden right for mike. Is it because we are at optimum sale value. Mid table. Class manager. Good wage control. Perfect time for a new owner with new ideas.

It strikes me as odd that he would sell at this stage. Can't decide what to think atm!

I prey it gets sorted before Jan so Rafa can strengthen during the window!

Hope we don’t end up with a “Venkys” though, can’t wait to see the back of sports direct plastered everywhere for free.

The buyer could defer payment. So buyers without enough funds could buy the club.

Or perhaps that would leave funds available to invest into playing staff and pay the final payment in the summer.

I think you've answered your own question. Mike will want a good price and we are probably at the optimum selling point in top half of the table. No point him waiting for us to potentially slip down the league and be open to cheaper offers. Buy low, sell high. I think that's always been his aim.

I believe a wealthy individual called Horatio Moriarti Roland Cavendish has expressed an interest hence the sudden need to sell.

Also odd that it comes a few days after we officially signed Merino - wonder if this was on the new owners say so?

I doubt it. It doesn't sound like they are particularly far down the road with negotiations. We were signing him anyway. I have been assuming that the purchase clause was triggered (10 appearances?) or it was pre-agreed to buy him at this time as maybe some Premier League cash has hit the bank account that we didn't have at the time. Speculation really.

Mikes wanted rid for ages. Now is his best chance for a long long time. The feeling is good around the place. Its looking like we should not have too much trouble staying up and securing Prem football. Come on someone help us shift this tw*t!

Reading between the lines, it sounds like shared ownership could be on the cards. Probably with new investors at helm but under financial restrictions in terms of spending. And SD banners remaining of course! That they would mention paying in instalments signals that nobody is meeting Ashley's valuation so far.

It's eithergonna be Donald Trump and we'll be bankrolled by the Trump Organizationand United States Government, or knowing Ashley, Kim Jong Un and the full force of North Koreas considerable wealth.

Seriously though, cautiously optimistic. Perfect time to sell. We are on the up, are attracting positive publicity and there is a feel good factor. Ashley's Sky interview makes sense now. It was a blatant PR stunt to attract interest. There have reportedly been a series of nondisclosure and due dilligence rumours floating around. I suspect it will only be a matter of weeks. The question is, who? Chinese, Arab or American?

I'm baffled by this news. As far as I was aware, the club has been for sale since the last time he publically announced it was for sale years ago. Guess what, nobody wanted to buy a club in the North... so randomly stating it is for sale and that your inrention is hocking us to any one with a few million, is not a viable business proposal or sales tactic.

Some of you will add 2 and 2 and get "there must be some wealthy saviour round the corner" bullshit. There isn't.

If you are one of these people, please recite the following:

    1. There are very few multi billionaires who want to own a club who do not already own a club.
    2. Nobody who is a multi-billionaire would buy an English club that is not in Manchester or London, as Liverpool aren't selling.
    3. There are very few mega rich people who are not complete arseholes.
    4. Today announced like the 3rd official time we were in-effect transfer listed, after pitiful interest the first 2 times.
    5. Let's just shutdown your now desperate fan-led consortium "if we all sell our toasters we'd have enough". **** you. I like toast.
    6. This was a nonsense statement, by nonsense man, continue about your lives ffs.
