Match Day Thread The Longest Day Cumbrians v Chairboys 17th Oct 17

The Chairboys are on the road again this time its the long trip to Brunton Park to face the Cumbrians, this is our longest away day of the season so the question must be asked why is this a midweek game! that if the game goes ahead with a hurricane hitting the North West tonight we will all wait and see what devastation it brings.
The devastation has already hit the Chairboys squad with the casualty list getting longer and longer and to add to this Beano sits this one out after picking up his fifth yellow of the season so Blooms is likely to get a start will Gaz be making an appearance on the bench.
Brunton Park was where our Football League adventure began and it started with a 2-2 draw and that would do nicely to extend our unbeaten run to six games but I'm sure the lads will be going all out for the win and if the Beast has his mode turned on there is no stopping him

 

I've seen this question raised before and the most logical answer I have seen is that it is financially advantageous for the travelling club because it loses less gate money from having these matches away in mid week than if a local derby was played away mid week (ie having the more local matches on a Saturday results in higher home gates)

 

Good theory Ron so why are we at home to Swindon on Tuesday 13th Feb our midweek fixtures so far have been Mansfield away Crewe home with an away game at Accrington to come next month

 

Mansfield away and Accrington away are consistent with that theory. As is Wycombe away, for Crewe. Re Swindon, maybe the FA decided that not all mid week away matches should be long distances. I don't know, just passing on an explanation I read. I'm sure the FA worked it all out after full consideration

 

With our injury list maybe we should pray the storm causes problems at Carlisle's ground overnight and the game is postponed early before our fans set out.

 

If I am correct in previous seasons if we played teams like Carlisle & Crewe midweek the reverse fixture was also midweek

That looks like Alan Hutchinson in the commentary box, an old mate of mine when we were kids. Different schools but used to meet down the Rye nearly every night for a good game of football/cricket. The days when kids could walk to a park and come back in the dark, safely.

 

I was there makes me feel old now...oh wait a minute I am nearly as old as guy and slasher

I'm gonna watch the real Madrid spurs game tonight but will be keeping an eye on the wycombe game as well .I know I'm mad but put a bet on both games .

Yes and the FA Trophy finals at Wembley. I enjoyed the days when we ruled the Isthmian League and beat pros like Bournemouth away from home in the FA Cup. One of our classy league opponents was Hendon. I remember playing them to decide the title. Whatever happened to them, and Walthamstow Avenue, who took Man U to 2 replays in the FA Cup. Then there was Leatherhead, from the Athenian League, who caused havoc one year in the FA Cup. Great days when true amateurs could mix it with the top pros.

 

Saturday we had 14 shots with 2 on target. 1 in 7. Hope we can do better than that tonight

 

Ah i remember Chris(?) Kelly "The Leatherhead Lip" a name given him by the press for his mouthing off about what he was going to do to defences of FL teams,christ i'm showing my age now!
