Amazing isn't it that with one or two exceptions all of our favorite players come from a time before football started in 1992.........:emoticon-0100-smile

Not really. You’re all old and have bad memories and grew up before televisions and replays confirmed how bad some of those players actually were back then, especially defenders, who cannot be compared to the ones now because the old ones had that luxury of passing backwards to the keeper to hold at the last minute, the keepers now even needing to be skilled foot-ballers than just ball-handlers <laugh>

Or maybe we're just open minded enough to appreciate players from different eras and don't wear blinkers like some youngsters eh?

All of the defenders mentioned on this thread played most of their careers after passing back to the keeper was stopped in 1992. Baresi played one of the best defensive performances of all time in the 1994 World Cup final. Presumably all of the pre 1992 strikers were better than today’s as the defences they played against had an extra option. Plus the offside rule was tougher, no ‘level’ stuff. Instant replays started in 1963.

    But you probably know better.

I know it’s not very PC but I secretly agree with this. Wish he had played in Europe for a bit.

Anyway, we need a keeper or two. I’ve always been told that Lev Yashin was the best but I know nothing of him. We have been lucky, until relatively recently, with great English keepers (Shilton, Clements and Parkes at the same time ffs). I’m sure this bloke is no better keeper than these and others, but he’s a great leader, a great character and a great, dignified man.

You just have. Sublime player, post a clip. It’s not meant to be a ‘who is the best’ thread (though I should know better than to think a thread on here is anything but random), just personal favourites.

This guy should be included in the "entertainers" section, a true one club man, a joy to watch. Also seem to recall one time when he played at HQ waiting to take a corner he sat on the wall of Ellerslie (?) and chatted to the fans.....

Mrs Uber got into a lift with a friend at the West Quay shopping centre in Southampton last year. There was a guy with a young girl, presumably his daughter, so Mrs Uber pulled silly faces at the girl and made her laugh as they rode the lift.

When they got out her mate said,”you did realise that her father was Matt le Tissier, didn’t you?”

Mrs Uber, being enormously aware of the world around her, and more so about Association Football, said,”who?”

Another from the early Premier League era and probably the first overseas player to have a huge impact on the game and one of the few that was worth the admission fee to games on their own......

I have seen so many gifted players over the years. Booby Moore, George Best, Jimmy Greaves (who scored with his hand at LR I seem to remember), Dennis Bergkamp, Zola, there are far too many to mention them all. One non Hoop that I thought was an outstanding player was Liam Brady, loved watching him play, what a talent.
But, my vote will always go to this man, and the reason I have been a Hoop since 1968.

Looking at this again 47 years later still defies belief.....

The funny thing is that he always seemed to have a bit of a nightmare when he played against the R's

No, we have sharp eyes and are objective in re-examining how things were and how they played out and know how to use technology to time things and analyze things properly and scientifically <laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh><laugh>

And if you were truly open-minded, you would agree with what I am saying, numbnuts! So you just contradicted yourself. Nice. <doh><doh><doh><doh>:emoticon-0102-bigsm:emoticon-0102-bigsm:emoticon-0102-bigsm:emoticon-0102-bigsm
