A Wales victory and a Serbia victory mean we would go into the playoffs.
The top 4 FIFA ranked teams are seeded in the playoffs. Currently we are 13th in the world. The rankings on 13th October are the ones that matter. A win would almost guarantee us a seeded position, thus avoiding the highest ranking teams.

    COME ON WALES

Here's how I think the situation is, but I could easily be wrong:

If Wales win they will definitely get to the playoffs as their 14 points in the 'Qualifying table' would beat Slovakia's 12 who seem to be currently in last place. If Serbia screw up against Georgia then Wales could still win the group.

If Ireland win, Wales will be third in the group and it's all over.

The complicated scenario is a draw. That would mean Wales are runner-up in the group but don't necessarily make the play-offs. Wales and Slovakia would both have 12 points in the 'qualifying table' but Slovakia's GD is +5, as you say, but Wales' GD would remain at +2, therefore Slovakia would be ahead of Wales. Wales' fate would then depend on the game between Ukraine and Croatia in group I. If that game were a draw then Wales and Croatia would have the same points and the same goal difference. It then goes down to goals scored, and that will depend on whether the draws for each team are 0-0, 1-1, 2-2 etc. If Ukraine or Croatia win then they leapfrog Wales to 14 points in the qualifying table and Wales miss out as they would last in the 'qualifying table'.

I'm off for a lie down now <laugh>

    That's how I make it.

Also, if we win and Holland beat Sweden we will finish 4th in the 2nd place table and be a seeded team for the play-off.

And, If we win and the Croatia/Ukraine match doesn't end in a draw, then Scotland would have dropped out even if they had beaten Slovenia yesterday. Small consolation for the jocks.

I've read that the seeded teams will be based on FIFA rankings at the time of the play-off draw, so Wales could be 8th in the play-offs table and still be seeded. <ok>

If we make the play-offs then we will be a seeded team.

I'm so confident we'll beat Ireland but we'll need a strong ref coz they'll try to kick lumps out of us; that's all they've got.

    Wales 2 - 0 Ireland

Yes of course you are right. It's the top 4 according to FIFA rankings rather than the 2nd place table. Good news. So potentially looking like NI, Sweden, Denmark or Greece in the playoff.

As I've read it, the seeded teams are the 4 highest teams in the FIFA rankings on 13th October.

    Here's a final interesting scenario...

If it's Wales 0 Rep Ireland 0 and Ukraine 1 Croatia 1, that would mean:

Wales and Croatia both have 12 points
Wales and Croatia both have a GD of +2
Wales and Croatia both have scored 7 goals

The next criteria is goals scored away from home. You'll be pleased to know that Wales have scored 4 and Croatia currently only 1 (make that 2 if they draw 1-1 in Ukraine tonight).

<yikes> It's now time just to watch the match <laugh>.

    Fingers crossed.

Too many rubbish teams - the likes of San Marino , Gibralter , Malta and Scotland should be in a pre qualifying tournament of their own.

But these are the teams that England beat easily in qualifiers, making them think they're better than what they are, only to get humiliated in major tournaments then.

The current format, therefore, works I reckon :)
