Seeing No. 1 Japser's comment about visiting Kansas city, I have to admit to having a fascination with this city's music scene from the 1920's and on until the 1940's with the emergence of Charlie Parker. I love the bands of Count Basie, Bennie Moten , Andy Kirk and Jay McShann from this era as well as singers like Jimmy Witherspoon and Jimmy Rushing. However, I suppose this record about a celebrated Kansas City bar-tender pretty much sums up my impression of what Kansas City was like back then:-

I agree with your comment, Jasper, about keeping this thread going. It sometimes ends up in some pretty weird places that are pretty interesting.

Another classic from Kansas City is this recording by Jay McShann's big band with vocals by blues shouter Walter Brown. The alto solo is by a very young Charlie Parker.

Back in 1987 I met Jay McShann at Edinburgh festival and he was a realm character. When I asked him what Kansas City was like in it's 1930's heyday he commented about the amount of fun you could have in those days. Unfortunately the band's book was stolen and the arrangements were lost forever.

Another new Foo Fighters song, The Line from their new album Concrete and Gold. Interestingly Justin Timberlake is to feature on a song from the new album too.
