Now that the dust is starting to settle and putting rivalries aside, what have we learned from the Bent and Carroll transfers?

We can all debate and discuss for ever who is to blame; did they put those requests in because they wanted to or because they were forced to? Did they go for the chance of bettering their careers or was it just the cash? Did Quinn and Ashley do right taking silly offers for them, to enhance the long term futures of our clubs or were the did big bucks on offer just too good to turn down.

The truth is we will all have an opinion and speaking from the Sunderland side I could never envisage Quinn doing anything that would not be for the benefit of the club, mind I could never see Bent walking away.

What have I learned, well nothing really, just confirmed what I already knew but had maybe forgotten.

When it comes down to it we love our footballers when they do well for us and rightly so. We thank our chairmen and owners when they bring us better players, and rightly so. We adore our managers when they get us those wins, and rightly so.

But the only people who really care about our club are the daft buggers like me and you who spend time on internet forums talking about them. Who buy over priced shirts and proudly wear them. Who scan the newspapers and TV programmes to hear news about them and who spend money they often cant afford to stand in the cold and wet to support them.

The next time a Sunderland player kisses his badge I will think, thank you for your affair with us but its me who really loves us.

Well said. Bent leaving was a poor show of commitment. Carroll leaving is even worse, because this is supposed to be the club he supported since a child.

How much is loyalty worth these days? £80000 per week by the looks of things... :(

The thin I always find amusing is, you cant blame him for taking the money because footballers have such a short creer, they have to make it whem they can. FFS Bent was on about 40k a week with us, no idea what Carroll was on with you but short carer or not.

To be fair, I'm beginning to wonder if Carroll did support us as a child badger.
I went to sixth form at a Emmanuel College which isn't that far from Joseph Swan and around there the families are mixed supporters of both the North East's clubs. There was always rumours his family were more S'land fans than Newcastle.
I can't blame him for the money, but don't understand all this spiel he is releasing with "friend of the krays" Steve Wraith, an opportunistic sort of fellow and think it's just to save face since he has effectively burnt bridges to not just a football club, but his local area and the like.
If he didn't want to go, why didn't he just say no? (great now I'm going to have that grange hill anti-drugs song in my head all day)
Although I definitely don't think Ashley is innocent, it is probably more six of one, half a dozen of the other and people saying one way or the other without knowing the facts are just being daft.

A fool maybe but at least you still have mates and are not alone. I support a team down the road but will be there tonight, our first game since Bent left and I promise its like when a lass dumps you. The pain is such you think it will never end, you then meet a new girl and the old one is not even a memory. I'm looking forward to seeing Sessegon tonight, the latest who says how pleased he is to proudly wear the red and white. Like all young romances, I really want to believe him but, you know when you have that niggle at the back of your mind?

Spot on Syd, the badge kissing thing really boils my p***. But it seems much worse when when it's "one of us". Maybe we expect too much when we compare people to Shearer as he turned down all in sundry time after time to stay with us. The fact we weren't the best never mattered. This time though it actually felt like we were on the up and with a bright future ahead. I just hope we get the truth from the club today, but I somehow doubt it.

I think you have the wrong idea about you role has a fan sirtoon. You turn up, pay your cash and believe what you are told. I love Quinn but still not sure about how Bent could be sold, against his wishes within 48 hours. But Quinn says he was so it must be true, I think.

I almost ended up with a scouser before my current lass, proper stunner but couldn't be putting up with the accent!

Syd: Spot on mate, agree with pretty much everything you've said here. Unfortunately the clubs aren't and never were ours, might have been true at the turn of the last century, but we are just the customers now. Is there any other industry where companies can get away with treating their customers so poorly and still get their repeat custom?

Spot on Sid, nice to have someone who understands the situation with out taking the piss and you've certainly put it into perspective with the badge kissing et al.

I suppose it hurts more this time cause he's a local lad who apparently loved the club, but what hurts more is the late transfer request which has left us short of time to get a replacement which Pardew and Ashley failed to spot even though they knew it was coming.

If he left for £35 Mill in the summer when we had time to get cover I could live with that.

    AC & DB are in a long line of footballers who profess undying love for a club but when more money is offered they can't wait to get away. Judas Carroll has compounded his felony by sending texts to a mate to con us into believing he really didn't want to go Liverpool. If he didn't want to leave he could have simply send No and that would have been the end of it. As the Journal says;

"Carroll will not want to be painted as a villain when he intends to return to the North East to visit family and friends or enjoy a night out as a Liverpool player, ..."

My only consolation is that £35m is way too much for him but I have serious doubts how much of this will be used by the Pieman to strengthen the team. Step up to the plate time for Shola, Best, Lovers & Ranger.

Money talks both Newcastle and Sunderland have done well getting millions for their strikers.

Sunderland have a Chairman who is willing to spend money to strengthen their squad and a one i would trust.

Newcastle have an owner who doesnt see the bigger picture, ok sell Carroll but have someone in to replace him.

    Do I trust Ashley, no.

    Good thread.

A bit like that for me with Bent, he wanted to go so not a lot to say but it was the manner of him going. I agree about the local lad bit and with him now saying he did not want to go, well, who do we believe. I feel like I cant believe anyone anymore but like an old fool I will be at the SoL tonight, excited and shouting again. Will we ever learn.
