If you say that your head isn't right, no manager can select you. This meant that Mauricio didn't want to spend time on him....how could you practice formations with a player that you will never be able to use. It was noticeable that Virgil rejected the idea that he refused to train (which no one had accused him of), but didn't deny that he had refused to play (which people...notably Liverpool fans...believed he had). It's a moot point. He's back in training, so we are assuming that he has changed his attitude to playing....we will have to see.

 

I won’t boo him. I think I’ll just be a bit ‘meh’ if he gets a game.

He is still our player and he is potentially world class, but he’s a total dick, and I know that now.

If we got to the cup final, I would feel unhappy with him going up to lift the trophy.

 

Life's too short to bear grudges. I get making a stand to send a message, but hopefully we've done that now. There's nothing to be gained from the club being vindictive.

It's up to VvD to prove himself to the manager and the squad now. Nothing else matters.

I want him back playing, he is by far our best player, I bet the other players still get on with him so no need to worry about team spirit, he's been a bit of a cock but so what. Our team with VVD in it is a much better team, not just in defence but all over the pitch. I will cheer him if he scores and I will call him a ****er if he ****s up, same goes for every player.

To solve this moral quandary I have decided that whenever VvD does something good I will cheer for Les Reed and will not actually be cheering for Virgil at all. That way I can cheer all I want and not feel dirty.

 

All this talk about not booing him, holding grudges etc. I struggle to understand the logic of this. The lad has been a Dick, he has been guided by his agents. It is as much as anything down to them for all this hassle surely they as much as anyone owe Saints an apology and should take the can for the meeting with Liverpool.
The lad has made a big mistake, but who on here has not at some time made a bad decision?
Give the guy a break and let's let him know how much we fans actually like him. You never know it actually may make him think twice about leaving us.

 

Would never boo him, but, since my private thoughts never hurt Saints, I reserve the right to dislike Virgil. He met up with other teams' managers behind Southampton's back and tried to force a move after signing a long contract and being laid off for half a season. That is totally out of order and disrespectful...anyone decent would know that he had to give us another full season at his best and try to negotiate his way out privately. He would have been in exactly the same position that he is in now, but without the acrimony. Yes, he may not have been given permission in a year's time, but it wouldn't seem as knobbish as it does right after signing a long contract and not playing for so long.

As I've said before couldn't care less about what VVD has done to try and further his career. He is still a Saints player and if he is playing then he will get my support

I noticed that, according to the Telegraph, Virgil still has a slightly different training schedule because of his ankle injury. So not completely recovered if he still has some limitations.

 

If he's going to give 100% and is fully fit then he can play. Any less than that then he should not be picked for the match day squad including subs. I would rather have Yoshi or Jack giving 110% than a sulky VVD thinking he's too good to play for us. Even when he does play for us, scores a hat trick and makes 6 goal line clearances, it still won't make me like him. He's burnt his bridges as far as I'm concerned. I will be cheering on Saints not him. Some seem to blame his agent, and he certainly played a part, but VVD is 26 not a little boy. He made a decision to continue to follow the advice he was receiving.
