Tomorrow Saturday 20th August, will see the arrival of Peter Reidâs Plymouth Argyle to the Priestfield. A game pre-season that I would have seen as tough competition for the Gills against a team that had spent many a season in the Championship, until successive relegations in 2009/10 and 2010/11 to reach the lowly domain of League Two football. It appears after three games that Plymouthâs fortunes have still not changed, with them currently in 22nd place in the League. Iâm sure it must have seemed a promising start for them with a point away to Shrewsbury in their first game, only to be followed by two defeats at home. So with one point away from home, Plymouth will be looking to add to that tally in their second away game, when I take my usual seat in the Medway Stand supporting the Gills. Last season Gillingham just missed out on a play off place, despite a dreadful start to the 2010/11 season, where as this season the Gills have taken seven points from nine, only to be denied a 100% winning start by a goal in the dying seconds at Barnet. So although an impressive start by the Gills, sometimes those little twists of fate that cost you two points can also turn out very costly come the end of the season. I have predicted a 1-0 win to the Gills, in the hope of maintaining our good start to the season and to hopefully remain up there with the early front runners in League Two. The Gillingham manager and team have now given the fans high expectations, we would probably have settled for a point pre-season against our visitors tomorrow, so would another draw now just feel like two points dropped? Peter Reid is reported to have told his players to stand up and be counted tomorrow as they can expect a âphysical encounterâ http://www.thisisdevon.co.uk/story-13158372-detail/story.html? Andy Hessenthaler at the same time believes Kedwell can hit the goal trail, after failing to find his scoring boots in the previous three games, maybe also looking to see if Jack Payne can supply another stunning strike from the young midfielder. It is early days in League Two and three points can make all the difference at this early stage in the season, come tomorrow at 5 oâclock the table can look so much different but from one Gills supporter letâs hope not. http://www.gillinghamfan.com/match-reviews.html
I think we will win comfortably tommorrow although the team can't be complacent. I am not worried at all that Kedwell has not yet scored,it's a monkey we should not be putting on his back. He has stepped up a league and is working on his own. As soon as he gets a regular partner he will be fine. I feel for Plymouths situation but this game is survival of the fittest and I can't see past Gills beating them tommorrow
Nice to know that opposing sides are already treating us with respect. However......with our, at present, lightweight attack so much responsibility rests with the remainder of the team. To date no one has tried to shy away from this task. I'm predicting a tough game, however if our back line and midfield perform the way they did at Brighton (organised, skilful and aware) then support for Kedwell will, as we have seen already, be there.
