That's one of those wonderful 'Dell Tannoy' tunes which, in my mind, has me leaning against the wall in the Milton end, with the Mob gathering behind me, about an hour before kick-off. I wonder if anyone at SFC realised how much they were going to hard wire tender young minds. I almost do a 'Pavlov Dog' response these days.
Another personal favourite artist has his 63rd birthday today, Singer and prolific Songwriter, Elvis Costello was born Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus in Paddington on this day in 1954.
Happy Birthday Mr McManus! People may not know that the future Elvis Costello was inspired to become a professional musician by standing in the mud to watch the Grateful Dead's 5 hour set at Bickershaw Festival near Wigan in May 1972. I've got the Get Happy! album, and the headline on it '20 Hot Hits' is absolutely true. Every track could have been considered a single. Not a bum track on it. For me, it vies for being his best album. BTW, did you know that Oliver's Army rarely gets played on the radio these days, because the 'N' word makes an appearance. Said in the same way that Bill Maher did on US TV recently, and was hauled over the coals for. If you do hear it, wait for a bleep or pause. Arguably silly, imo, but that's another subject. Anyway, I'm going to pop up something else from the Armed Forces album. Here's possibly the catchiest modern waltz ever written, and the lyrics are the usual searing stuff. Sunday's Best:
I urge all music fans, not just jazz fans, to watch tonight's BBC Prom on the iPlayer (available until 23 September, so no excuses). It features the Metropole Orkest's tribute to the music of Charles Mingus, with an astonishing array of world-class soloists, including trumpeter Christian Scott, baritone sax player Leo Pellegrino, and vocalist Kandace Springs. A truly great evening of wonderful music.
