Carabao Cup - Watford v Bristol City

Troy Deeney is set for his first appearance of the season when Watford host Bristol City in the Carabao Cup.

The Hornets club captain missed the opening-day draw against Liverpool as he recovered from a pre-season groin operation, and was an unused sub at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Watford are unbeaten after two Premier League games under new boss Marco Silva, drawing their opener at home to Liverpool before a 2-0 win at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Bristol City, meanwhile, are without a win since the first round of the cup two weeks ago, where they cruised through with a 5-0 thrashing of Plymouth.

    Team news
Younes Kaboul, Daryl Janmaat, Roberto Pereyra, Tommie Hoban, Craig Cathcart and Mauro Zarate are out injured for Watford.

Boss Silva has confirmed he will name a strong side for the second-round tie. Etienne Capoue and summer signing Will Hughes are also pushing for their first starts of the campaign.

Aden Flint is included in the City squad as Robins boss Lee Johnson prepares to make changes for the second-round tie. Flint has not played since coming on as a substitute on the opening day of the season amid speculation linking the centre-back with a move to Birmingham.

Loan signing Cauley Woodrow is cup-tied having already played for Fulham in the competition, while Matty Taylor and Milan Djuric remain absent with groin injuries. So City have just two fit strikers available at Vicarage Road, record summer signing Famara Diedhiou and teenager Freddie Hinds.

    Opta stats
Watford and Bristol City have faced one another twice previously in the League Cup, both times in the second round - the Hornets won 3-2 in September 2001 and lost 1-0 in September 2003.

Watford won their last match against Bristol City at Vicarage Road, winning 2-0 in an FA Cup third round replay in January 2014.

Bristol City haven't won away from home against Premier League opposition since January 1994, when they beat Liverpool 1-0 in an FA Cup third round replay courtesy of a goal from Brian Tinnion.

The Hornets have only reached the third round of the League Cup once since they reached the quarter-final in 2008/09 - losing to Norwich in the third round in 2013/14.

I expect us to be in for a tough time - whilst I don't think they'll field their first team, there'll be a handful in there, such as Deeney and Capoue.

Nothing to lose but pride in the case of a tonking. Like Holden says, it's an opportunity for those that do play to show what they can do - it should be the case that places are up for grabs if players perform well, so that no-one gets too complacent.

I personally could give much of a toss. Provided the games themselves aren't actually moved to insane times to appeal to the international market who cares that much about the draw? I think the idea of playing competitive games abroad could well come to fruition though, as the NFL have set a precedence now, and moving League Cup matches would be less controversial than League matches. I'd be against that - clubs should have to make do with their pre-season tours to expand their fan base on the global stage.

I enjoy a draw when it's on, seeing who we're gonna be drawn against. It's something to look forward to.

Personally I couldn't give a **** about trying to reach to foreign markets. For me football is means to me my club and I'd rather effort be put into making the sport for the match attending fans rather than commercial plastic fans
