Sunderland striker Josh Maja is seeing a specialist tonight to determine the extent of his knee injury. The 18-year-old forward enjoyed a successful pre-season campaign with four goals, but hasn’t featured since the Bradford City win after picking up a knee injury. As things stand Maja has not needed an operation and it isn’t thought to be serious, but it has already led to him missing the first three games of the campaign. Simon Grayson and the medical department are keen to get a second opinion and the teenager will see a specialist on Monday night. Grayson said: “Josh is seeing a specialist tonight to clear up one or two things with his knee. “Hopefully it isn’t negative news, it is just something that hasn’t healed like we thought it would from when he first sustained it. “He is just going for a check-up at teatime to get an understanding of what potentially could be wrong or not wrong.” It is understood that Maja won’t be involved against Sheffield Wednesday, but there is brighter news elsewhere with Bryan Oviedo and Jack Rodwell training again today. The pair featured in the Under-23 game against Tottenham Hotspur on Friday as they continue their return from injury. “All of the players came through the game on Sunday so we have the same squad to pick from,” said Grayson. “Bryan Oviedo and Jack Rodwell have also trained again today. We are in good shape at the moment.”
To be originally told his injury wasn't anything to worry about and then he's seeing a specialist tonight is more than a bit of a worry for me. Hope nothing serious is found and he's back in the first team scene asap, this kid could do well out of the industry currently being shown by his more senior strike partners. Fingers crossed.
Came at the wrong time whatever it is, shame for the lad as he looks the part no question. For the moment our forward play is more than acceptable, but we need competition in all areas for the long hard slog that lies ahead.
Did the lad make a copilation video of himself? fair play to him though, looks decent. I'd not seen any pre-season footage before now. First goal was a bit central, championship keeper would have saved it. Some decent play in there though, hope he gets his chance this season.
He seems to be living up to his potential - looks very good and clinical - hopefully this injury is a just a minor set back
Add in McNair, Watmore, N'Dong... People forget how young these lads are as they've been in the first team picture so long. Not one of them is more than a year older than Honeyman.
Staggering all three have had grief too. Watmore's dad has had the dogs abuse on twitter, People still living in 2002 expected NDong to be the finished article and a world beater just cause he cost 14m(which is **** all really) and McNair was used as an additional stick to beat Moyes with and was swiftly written off as a result, same for Love. And some people may wonder why I often mention the poison in our own fan base.
So he's having the op on his knee and will be out for a month, still plenty of time to get lots of games this season. He looks good enough to me.
