Hi Bri thanks for your kind thoughts. In answer to your questions,I was advised by the transplant team that there are three options open to me,which are :- Double lung from one donor ( perfect match required for this so unlikely that this would ever be from two separate donors). Single lung (having one lung you would still function the same as having two). The good lung that they would put in would NOT be effected by the deceased lung that is still present. Lobe transplant - The lungs are made up of three distinctive portions (large lung) and two distinctive portions (small lung). These portions are called LOBES and can be separated and placed into position as one for each side.Again they would function exactly the same as having a normal sized lung. Because of the nature of my condition, over time the lungs shrink in turn the muscle around the lungs contract and this then causes the chest cavity to collapse and get smaller. Therefore one of the things they check in the MRI scan is the structure and physical size of the chest cavity,so they know exactly what they have to work with. All quite technical. I believe that all donor lungs come from deceased people, however could not state that a lung from a living person has ever been used but there might have been cases in the past that this has been done (I don,t really know). What I do know is that one type of donor is called a Heart beating donor (in most cases). This is where someone is declared as having brain stem death (so hence no control of any of the bodies organs. In these cases the body organs are supported with a ventilator and other therapies so that they can be used for a number of individuals. Hope this has enlightened you
As I said before hope all goes well mate, I just signed up on Wednesday night to be an organ donor where they can have owt i'v got if they need it also re signed up as a blood donor as you can give blood until you are 70 now if you have been an existing donor every 12 weeks i think. any body else on here have signed up?
Wow, thanks mate for the details. It's answered all my questions. Didn't even know the lobe thing happened. Obviously it's a horrible thing you're going through, glad my request for details didn't upset you cause aside from being horrible it's very very interesting. Human beings are capable of such marvelous science. Listen mate, you're a top poster. I wish you the very best. But most of all, I wish you swift treatment. Hope this comes through for you asap.
