Have to say I agree that we can't sell him to Liverpool without the board looking weak, regardless of the fee (within reason of course). Not really sure how anyone could say otherwise tbh.

It seems that the reporting of Liverpool to the PL was just a bit of a dick waving exercise to try and get some support from the fans... look a bit stupid if we then sell him to them anyway (though I still expect us to). The fact apparently had evidence that we supposedly didn't provide to the PL spoke volumes at the time and I think I said it was like we didn't want to kill the chance of the move happening this Summer completely.

Really with the 5 year deal, the fact we want an astronomical fee and the whole tapping up bollocks, this is our best chance to make a stand and if we don't then frankly we probably never will.

If we wanted to sell to Liverpool we would have done so. We were angry that a deal was being done behind our backs. Not going ahead with the complaint after Liverpool's apology was just common sense....we had made our point....didn't really want to open a can of worms with a team that we have to deal with every season. We had taken the moral high ground and put them in their place without starting a war.

 

Not if they were some way off our valuation we wouldn't. And if they decide to meet it then I expect he'll be in Livepool red next season.

 

That's how you know if they want to move for "football reasons" or for money.
When they look at the higher wage and think they will lose the first 2 or 3 years of the pay rise by losing their loyalty bonus so refuse to put a transfer request in, then you know the move is purely for money.

 

The buying team will match the 'loyalty bonus' - obviously no tapping up allowed though

 

They didn't put in a bid, that was the whole point of the complaint

 

Well yeah I know I was just responding to Fran saying if we wanted to sell him to Liverpool then we would have done... wasn't really the opportunity to do so though.

 

Particularly given that we've already made something of a stand, declaring that he's not for sale, getting Liverpool to break off pursuit, etc. Sell and we're indicating that teams can roll us with impunity.

Austin says Virgil has his situation and the other players have theirs, but he would be welcomed back if the transfer doesn't happen.
