You don't think that some clubs feed stories to hacks? That's just a tad naive. United want Dier to ask for a transfer or kick off about leaving. That's the only possible route to getting him and worked with Berbatov and Carrick.

However, times have changed and even if it happened I don't see it making any difference to us. We could afford to wait for him to get over it, we'll probably finish above you again and it's a World Cup season and he's not spending it sulking.

I'm not convinced United want Dier never mind want him to kick off.
It's lazy, they are linking him because he is a top English name not because he is what we need.

There's plenty out there that would approve the team and squad. Yeah its a good squad but they haven't won anything yet. To say we only need a back up for Eriksen is a bit naive.

    Best of luck, Luke.

Had a great season at Peterborough last year, Pompey's got themselves a good promising keeper.

I'm assuming Barry Fry's gob is the reason McGee didn't head to Peterbrough...

And perhaps the WUM-munition it gives to Spurs supporters when
baiting Adrian Durham (if our young GK was their player of the season -
ie literally saving them from utter spankings) .

Dier to united currently trending on twitter, with Ed Woodward supposedly stepping up their interest. The guardian are reporting it, and stating that the offer could be between £50-60m, and Dier is open to the move.

i know all of our players are under long contracts, but the longer we go without making any necessary signings that show our intentions is only going to fuel more speculation like this. We're one of only two prem clubs not to sign anyone yet. We need to show our current squad that we're looking to improve, before heads start getting turned.

Jordan Archer's apparently done well for Millwall, so this might work out well for McGee, too.
Very hard to break through in that position, given our options and interest in Lopez.
    Good luck to him.

His new manager, Kenny Jackett, worked with our youth players last season.
I think that the friendly relationship started under Sherwood, but it's good that it's continued.
Might send a loanee or two their way too, hopefully.

Much as I love Dier and think his future is enormous, he is firmly within the category of 'replaceable' players in the first team. Easily the weakest player in the back 3 and made numerous gaffes when we switched to a back 4 in Toby's absence. He was atrocious in most of our CL games. I know this is more down to youth than lack of ability, but the biggest negative ramification of his departure would be Alli becoming unsettled without his bestie.

Whilst I don't actually want any of our players to leave getting a fee of between £50m & £60 for Dier would be exceptional business and that money could then be spent on a 3rd centre back of the calibre of Toby and Jan (Van Dijk maybe?) as I am sure 3 at the back is going to be our favoured formation next season.

It's just not that easy. Virgil Van Dijk was being offered £200k p/w by Liverpool following the famed dirty weekend in Blackpool. We might be able to cobble together the transfer fee for a major talent but we can't afford the wages for someone in their prime and at the top of their game.

Eric Dier is 2 or 3 players in one. Okay, he's 2.5 players in one. He's excellent in defensive midfield and on the right of a defensive three. He's able to fill in at centre half against teams outside the CL or Top 6. He's very popular about the club, Mauricio Pochettino really rates him and he's only 23. Could we fill those gaps adequately for the transfer fee United will give us whilst taking into account the cost in wages for 2 really decent players? With Michael Keane costing Everton £30m, I'm guessing not.

In a couple of years Dier will be worth more than he is today. He'll only be 25 and if we think we can upgrade then, so be it. We might have a more forgiving wage structure or CCV, Josh Onomah, etc. may be ready to displace him Right now, selling someone who is an England regular to one of our competitors says small thinking and is how we'll collapse this whole pack of cards. If we're to progress then it is a maximum of one departure per summer. if we start to look like Southampton, then the whole thing's ****ed.

Here's the part that makes no sense to anyone other than a sociopath or a sports writer: how does not signing any players equate to players wanting to leave?

While it's an extreme example, let's all remember back to the summer of 2013 where Baldini showed "ambition" while pissing away a lot of money that wasn't his. Were the existing players happy as there were players incoming, or did a combination of players who were already at the club and players we signed that summer get pissed off that they weren't getting a run of games due to having to chop and change to give all the players as much time as possible?

    Dier is indispensable.

As Brian pointed out, he's 2.5 players in one. Selling him means we'd have to sign a good CB and a good DM, which in this market, would likely end up costing us more than we what we'd sell him for. Baring in mind people are already panicking that we haven't signed anyone, I think it's mad that some are even contemplating the idea of selling Eric, £50m is a nice figure but an Eric Dier hole in our side is far more expensive than that. For me he's just as important as Toby, Kane and Alli. He's pretty much the reason we can switch from a 3-4-2-1 to a 4-2-3-1 so efficiently and effectively.

I also see him as potentially our future captain.

And if we did sell him I'd have to change my ****ing username and I'm not having that.
