Barbera excellent in general. Known as a bit of a paupers grape in Italy but i really disagree. Sparkling barbera is a belter when you hit on a decent one. Italian reds do very well for me. Spanish wine does well because it's such a popular holiday destination i think. My favs are Chilean, South African and Argentine - you don't tend to pay over the top for them which i think is really important. I refuse to be ripped off just because i'm buying a famous name.

Just remembered we used to have a thread called The Wine Cellar for this type of discussion so that these valuable conversations didn't get lost. I wonder where that went <doh><laugh>

Cheers. Had a quick look at your site, interesting to see you have Spice Route, we visited them a couple of years ago and their innovations on chocolate/ beer (CBC) really stood out against their bigger neighbours. I didn't rate their wine compared to neighbouring Fairview but may have to revisit.

Very happy to see this. However, the crooks are shortening up Barney Roy and Eminent too prior to declaration day tomorrow!

There is nowhere else to post about wine Bob. The other wine thread disappeared but maybe the objective for that one was over optimistic. Now we have a wine merchant available to keep it going I'm going to try it again. It may "disappear" but I'll add it to the main index so it can always be found when needed

many moons ago while on a cycling holiday in the loire region , came across a very interesting wine maker , he was organic and even picked his grapes on the full moon , as he was convinced the flavour is fulller at that period due to gravitational pull , the guy had a chemistry degree and seemed very knowledgable , as for his wine , the full bodied red was superb , and the rose , a wine not usually to my taste was also very palatable . we went back a couple of years later and bought a case off him , i asked why he didn't export to u.k. , more hassle than it was worth he said , he was selling locally all his product , but it seemed a shame we can't get hold of these wines unless we go on holiday and literally happen apon them !

Surprised that Hayley Turner’s one-off ride Flying Sparkle – which she advertised on ITV on Saturday – went off at such generous odds.

When you watch races looking for the same horse all the time, you quickly learn when you have done your money. With Dyna Might at Pontefract, she blew the start and that was pretty much it. The gaffer was practising his Anglo-Saxon as the winner crossed the line as Breakwater Bay finish second to Dyna Might three starts ago but was 9lb better off with her, so she might have struggled to win anyway.

Dyna Might has an entry at Beverley on Friday night but I think that was provisional in case she won today. The gaffer is off to Beverley on Friday, whether she runs or not.

At Windsor, Orithia was well supported – she was tipped on SportingLife.com – in the early prices but on the track the money piled on Hannon’s Castellated (despite the lack of any credible form) and it duly collected. As it was, I have no idea what Fergus Sweeney was doing on Orithia as she needed to be up with the pace. The gaffer will be spitting feathers when I see him in the morning. The problem with them playing musical jockeys...

He's a nightmare. Daren't back a horse with him on it because he'll get the horse boxed in in a 2 horse race. But then he then he gets praised for a "masterful" ride on an outsider that beats the one you back <steam>

He is clearly very capable but one has to wonder what he's playing at most of the time
