Sunderland have been offered the opportunity to sign Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, it has been claimed, although Newcastle are also keeping tabs on the situation of the Dane.

According to the Daily Mail, Bendtner has been touted out to the Black Cats, who could still enter the market for another forward, while their north-east rivals are also keen on the 23-year-old.

Sunderland's interest in Bendtner could reportedly be tempered by injury to Asamoah Gyan, who sustained an ankle injury during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

The Ghana international was replaced in the second-half by summer signing Ji Dong-Won after falling awkwardly, and Steve Bruce is now said to be considering his options.

However, should the Sunderland boss decide to formalise his interest in Bendtner, it would appear he would have to go toe-to-toe with Newcastle in the pursuit of the Arsenal No.52.

Newcastle are reportedly contemplating adding another striker to their ranks this before the close of the window, with this summer having yielded only Demba Ba in terms of goalscoring reinforcements.

Arsenal have just lost Fabregas and will probably lose Nasri by the end of the window, Van Persie is still not fully fit and Wenger wants rid of his only other striker of note. Says to me that there is something wrong with Bendtner or maybe Wenger has been to the Steve Bruce school of buying strikers which incidentally was a 3 minute course with a pass rate of 100% and, only 2 pupils.

Bendtner,in my mind is similar to another player we got from Arsenal...Stokes,in that he has talent, but unfortunately thinks he's already made it and thinks he's a superstar...some of his performances prove otherwise.Could Bruce succeed where Wenger couldn't and bring out the best in consistently in him? But is he the player we should be looking to sign anyway?
    I don't think so..

Some of the best players around had confidence and, at times, a certain arrogance about them ................ for example, Cantona, Marsh, Bowles, Yorke, Cole, Frank Worthington et al. I am not for one moment putting Bendtner in the same class as some of them, but come on where have all the characters of the game gone, he is an arrogant character, but if he comes here ... playes every week .. and scores 15 goals a season for us, he will become a hero whether he thinks he is world class or not .................... go get him Brucie!!!!!

Not for me I'm afraid, especially at the wages he'll be wanting.

Have no fear, if his wage demands are too high he won't be coming. maybe the answer is a season long loan with an option to buy!!

Those players deserve to be arrogant, but I don't rate him. Would probably cost too much for his ability.

Agree whole heartedly. I don’t think that as we build as a consistent top 8 club challenging for Europe each season he’s the type of player we need. Wages etc. remind me of the RK days of contracts.
