Just an awful catastrophe. This country is receiving devastating news on a weekly basis it seems. Echo comments already made, this should not be happening in the 21st century and a manslaughter charge very possible for the tenant association. Why does it often need a horrific consequence to drive change with potential problems?
Well done QPR...taking an initiative in these terrible times http://www.qpr.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/grenfell-tower-donations-3730647.aspx http://www.sportsmole.co.uk/off-the...us-road-to-grenfell-tower-victims_300418.html Queens Park Rangers have opened their stadium Loftus Road to those affected by the devastating blaze at Grenfell Tower in West London. A number of people have died and at least 50 hospitalised after a fire ripped through the 24-storey North Kensington block in the early hours of Wednesday morning. More than 200 firefighters and 40 fire engines arrived at the scene, and the emergency services are still searching for residents who may be trapped in the building. QPR owner Tony Fernandes tweeted this morning that he contacted the club's chief executive Lee Hoos about turning the stadium into a relief centre. He wrote: "Tragic what I'm seeing in North Kensington. @QPRFC will do whatever it can to help. My thoughts to all. Really sad. I have asked @QPRFC lee hoos to see if loftus road could be used a relief centre . Our community team will be mobilised. We will do whatever."
The Lakenall fire in Southwark led to a raft of recommendations which were eventually on the desk of none other than Gavin Barwell, the Maybot's new gatekeeper. He spent a year doing nothing about it, his predecessors did nothing either, they've had the info since 2013. There were issues with the cladding used on the building from fires in other countries. Some serious issues for the investigators...
BBC said this am that reports of people throwing their kids out of windows in the hope they might survive. The stuff of darkest nightmares. There will have been much scurrying to cover backs this morning. Awful tragedy.
Watching the news in Paris and as always, in and amongst tragedy we also see the very best of humanity. Hats off to those who have donated clothes/food/supplies and to all businesses, including QPR, that have opened their doors.
Having 1 stairway in a 27 floor building is ludicrous. I'm in a 35 floor building with 2 stairwells and a fire hose on each floor.
Not sure about Grenfell Tower but many appartment blocks in London have flammable polyurethane insulation behind the cladding. Unfortunately offering affordable accommodation in West London has led to cost saving on materials - but, as often happens in corporate crime a wall of intransparency appears when trying to find who is actually responsible. So tragic and hearts go out to the victims and their relations - not that it helps much.
The main BBC reporter on the 6pm news kept calling it "North London", whilst Sophie Raworth was standing in West London with the block immediately behind her. It's W11 you fools!
Awful, horrific news. Whoever is culpable, they have to be brought to justice ! RIP those that have perished, and prayers for those fighting for their lives in hospital .
Truly horrible tragedy, I really can't imagine a worse way to lose your life. My thoughts are with the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones and the injured.
It's a scandal, heads will roll, well done both qpr and Ffc for helping out, the response has been moving from tne local people, so sad
I went through all this 9/11. It really affected me. Not been to the ste since even tho its 200 yards away.
I used to work for a US-owned company with its HQ in John Street. When visiting HQ, I stayed in the Marriott at the base of one of the towers (but cannot remember which one) many times. I've been back to visit the site a couple of times in the last few years and find it very moving.
