2017/18 we are joined by Hull, Middlesbrough and Sunderland each will have circa £100m from season 2016/17 ..........future teams being relegated possibly more in their relegation season and then 2017/18 £40m 2018/19 £33m 2019/20 £14m before any self generated income ! OK the teams, they are likely have a high wage bill pro rata (Championship v Prem )on a weekly basis but big savings are likely should they get shot of one or 2 of their big earners and reduce the squad ! maybe as much as £5m pa NEWCASTLE is a prime model of how "to do it" ... however...I think they will do well only if they spend at least half of what they are expecting to earn in 2017/18 on a couple or 3 quality players.... CITY, well generated income is likely < £10m > that's less than year 3 parachute payment so the void is immense .....
Parachute payments were meant to stabilize relegated clubs as they potentially would still have high earners on their books but much reduced income. It was meant to be a mechanism to ensure the clubs could continue to cover their costs. In reality, it has just proved to be an immense boost to relegated clubs to give them a much better chance of getting promoted again. hence why the yo yo's continue to do just that. Without parachute payments, clubs in the EPL would have to be more financial astute and this would serve to make the Championship so much more competitive. I personally detest the EPL and everything it stands for.
And the number of those people who detest it is growing. Unfortunately I fear that the Championship will head in the same direction eventually. I shall be watching a lot of the Vanarama National League again next season. Proper football played in the right spirit and by footballers not egomaniacs.
Even those huge payments don't always guarantee swift return to the top flight - Blackpool, Wigan, Villa? The money has to be used wisely.
That's quite true- When you look down the leagues, there are several of these clubs-Coventry are now in League 2 even. Portsmouth were prem not that long ago and have only just got out of League 2 again, as have Blackpool.
Ownership must accept a lot of the blame and how the league let's some of these people anywhere near a football club is beyond belief. Now we have a Greek on board at Forest who has a somewhat dodgy past with claims of match fixing I believe. Has insanity overtaken our sport where realism is totally unacceptable?
Parachute payments are also a reward for gaining access to the EPL. It is a guaranteed income, which clubs set budgets against. Without parachute payments; EPL owners would create something else to take its place. It is their cash income not anybody else's. Without parachute payments owners would continue to overspend, clubs without parachute payments are no more financially astute, the amounts are different, but the sums are similar due to FFP. Mr Lansdown's handling of BCFC's accounts is not a commitment to covering costs, the clubs running costs have not been covered via income for well over a decade. The EPL, is greedy, gross, unprincipled but Mr Lansdown has never raised BCFC's hand against anything it does e.g. Parachute payments which are for the benefit of the EPL v everybody else.
There would be something else to take their place, EPL clubs would create something else to take its place. ? A COMPENSATION PAYMENT FOR BEING RELEGATED . uuum no that would be a parachute payment in a different name ! the amounts are different, but the sums are similar due to FFP sums are similar???? what working out what to do with £100m v £10m are similar ! pray explain how a "gift" of £33m /£14m is similar / fair to a team that has to get by with self generated funds! [*]
Yes. Parachute payments in a different guise. Call it what you want, how about an EPL dividend for current and ex members. Maybe (really) that one has already been discussed. Yes. The sums via FFP are similar. Income rules v spending are set up the football pyramid. Meanwhile the amounts of cash evolve upwards in the case of increasing TV deals for the EPL.The latest was the EPL's biggie so the cash goes up for its members. The EPL is not meant to be fair. Its been ****ing football including grass roots football over for years. Its a self serving entity for itself and its members.
Frankly the EFL should kick EPL clubs out of the FA and League cups. I don't care about the "devaluation of the competition" crap. The EPL screws everyone other than its members, so f them.
Like many huge wealth creating organisations the EPL protected its interests v governance a long time ago. The EPL unlike fans of the game are very well represented within the FA. This vested interest means the FA runs to the EPL tune. Nothing is done that curtails the ability of the EPL to create its own wealth. That tune sees things like St Georges Park a hundred million pound FA development primarily to look after the EPL elite players at varying ages being created. Got football by the short and curlies this lot.
The EFL should intorduce a wage cap like in American sports, that would scupper the EPL clubs coming down as they would have to compete more evenly then.
I've said the very same thing on this forum many times. The NFL is the absolute model of success for pro sports, other than the no-relegation nonsense. The big teams from New York and Chicago are regularly outplayed over the course of the season by little Green Bay, a team from a small city in Wisconsin that is owned by the fans. Introduce that model and not only do teams truly have to rely on coaching and tactics rather than just buying the best players but the leagues themselves would be more stable. It's great for the fans as there's no consistent small group of teams that dominate completely. Financial Fair Play does not go far enough as it still helps the bigger clubs with more turnover.
Which will always occur. Teams with bigger fan bases and stadiums will have higher incomes even if transfer fee budgets are imposed. But that is not the purpose of FFP it is to stop clubs and owners spending wildly past incomes BCFC included. If you are referring to owner investment (?) v income. Bristol City exist on owner equity and loans. FFP rules being more stringent would put BCFC in financial danger of bankruptcy. The EPL had a three-year timespan to meet EUFA's financial standards, they did and undermined them with the next TV deal.
