I used to think Harold Godwinson defeated the army of Harald Hadrada in battle at Chelsea's ground. Didn't really get the big deal about the forced march to Hastings after that.
Bertrand could just have been understandably disappointed after the team worked so hard. Hardly a massive shock to lose to Arsenal....now Middlesbrough on the other hand
I can see Steven Davis going for one last big move. I doubt Saints would do anything to persuade him to stay, despite 2 years being left on his contract.
Brighton and Atletico - **** off, Newcastle - £15mill and you can have him. Honestly think if a decent offer comes in for Davis we should consider it.
Managers value players like Davis for his reliability and the solidity he brings to the team. I would be very surprised if we sold him.
He's more than just a workhorse though, he's one of the few players in our mf who almost never gives the ball away, & usually sees the forward pas. If he could just get his rare attempts on goal on target, he'd be priceless. He probably wouldn't be playing for us though.
I have a long list of players who I would be happy to sell if the right offer came in but JWP, Davis and Cedric are not on that list so I suggest these clubs b**ger off!
Very true. Good player that often goes unnoticed. However at saints what they bring to the team isn't the first factor considered when an offer is received; it is whether it makes financial sense. At 32 years old he doesn't have that long left so the board would probabaly cash in on an asset rather than let him run his contract down and leave on a free
Several summers in a row Davis was looked upon as a player which we should try to replace with a better version. Has his stock risen or have we gone backwards? I like Davis, but I don't think he should be in the starting lineup for us. He could be a valuable option from the bench, but not a starter.
I would respectfully suggest that he has been looked upon that way by people who fail to see what he brings to the side. The shortcomings in this case lie, in my opinion, with the lookers upon rather than with the player.
I've been promoting Davis on this board a good number of times, insisting that he must be in the first lineup whenever his place in the lineup was questioned or when he was occasionally omitted from the lineup by Poch or Koeman. I know very well what he brings to the side. But I'm also aware of his level, and it's not the same level as where we want to be as a club.
Where you want to be, perhaps. Whilst we would all love us to be a top 4 side, to me that's a dream. In reality we are Saints, not Arsenal or Man Utd (neither of whom look like making the top 4 this year anyway).
The club has set that goal, not me. But even if that's an unattainable goal, I still want us to improve when and where we can. Shane Long is a proven EPL player and brings a lot to the side, but we still bought Gabbiadini. Because he's better and will improve our chances of closing the gap. Having a midfielder that can score and assist occasionally would also aid in that aim.
I think with Bertie, regardless of his head being turned; the club isn't going places quick enough for him. He looked confident and comfortable under the FLGDC and if the club had invested the £4 billion pounds he wanted, the top four and regular European comps would've pacified him. Now, I see it as similar to the De Gea situation at United; they want to spend but don't necessarily need him in the sticks when they have a good young keeper a couple of years away and could buy another one for a fraction of what they could sell him for.
