I am considering only going to away matches. I still love my team, but I do find St Marys is not a bundle of bleeding laughs these days. I entirely agree with your analysis. 1969ish was my own lowpoint, but otherwise we agree!
There is a case which could definitely be made [and legod knows I've made it enough times] that if Saints are too successful, or have key players that are outstanding, then they simply have their wings clipped once again. This is why SFC so desperately needs an awful lot of money injected into it. So that we can say **** off to those clubs who want to dismantle the success. We've tried the small/medium sized club approach, the Green Bay Packers approach, as Krueger calls it. It doesn't work, unless you get lucky and get the perfect combination for one season - Leicester City. Unfortunately, if we are going to mix it with the big boys we have to get nearer to their size financially. It doesn't matter about the location - the medium sized provincial city stuff because it's all about the global sell. Saints can have the image of David amongst the Goliaths, because that's different and appealing, but be very much closer to having their financial clout that it starts to no longer matter. Let's face it, Juventus don't do too badly on it, and they don't have the massive stadium. What they do have is the image and the backing.
It certainly helped that we turned up expecting wins and goals. Though losing 2-0 at home to Rochdale still sticks in the memory. The crowd was different too though. And we had songs that were funny (like the Lee Barnard one).
http://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/southampton/news/45655/ Talk (whether real or fantasy) saying we are looking at Carvahlo and Silva.
That would probably be an illegal approach, as he's clearly under contract with Hull, who are not yet relegated and therefore his escape clause has not been triggered. Is that the "Southampton Way" to do illegal approaches? (we do it all the time in reality, but we have to keep up the front that we are a "nice club")
I remember that Rochdale game; that was a bad day; took my wife. Never seen the wife looked so miffed - she usually saves that look for me when l fall through the front door after l have had a late session with boys. No, definitely not a good day that one...
Maybe I was wrong thinking he only signed for 6 months. If so, not sure that is considered illegal as he is free to secure his future employment, perhaps like contractors or consultants do.
The idea that no one talks to anyone until contracts are finished is a myth....football (like any business) isn't run by Sunday School rules. It will be a case of our people talk to his people...the company will want to know if they are wasting their time or not and the person in question will want to know what possibilities are out there. Having said that, there may be no truth in any of it....could be a rumour started by someone guessing who might suit us.
Not sure about that Tom, I recall it for six months when he joined, I really don't think he signed longer... https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/2534814/who-is-marco-silva-hull-manager-former-clubs-career/
