Did anyone catch Kelvin Davis little joke at the start? He said he has got his B Training Licence so Claude had better look out! Much laughter in house, but food for thought!
And further, whilst my head, these days, wouldn't want Andrew Surman back in a heart beat, my heart would. I would love him to be back at the club he was always destined to be best with, but for rotten circumstances. What memories we would have shared with him. The best we have is that 6-0 away to Wolves at Molineux. Which isn't at all bad, to be fair. But I would have loved for him to been a part of Saints rise back to the PL. Instead of which his departure allowed the club to remain solvent for a while longer
Still my lads favourite player and Wolves away 6-0 was his first away game. Couldn't agree more with your post.
Suggests that things are better in house than the media would have us think....jokes like that would be avoided or greeted with embarrassed laughter if his job was considered under threat. I would need a photo of Les laughing to be sure....now there's a scary thought.
The sight of him giving his shirt to a fan at Forest as we ended his last season is a clear memory for me. Other players were doing the same thing, but there was a genuine sadness about Surman's body language. That his move to Wolves didn't work out only adds to the feelings of lost opportunities for the guy. Slightly different note, did the reaction of Forest fans that day, when they applauded our fans for being so brilliant, make you desperately want them to win tomorrow and stay up? It was such a rare event and made a huge difference on such a bitter-sweet day. We went down with pride that day. It all adds to the wonder of being where we are now.
Who knows? It's a catchall though isn't it? 'Messi signs on' - a surprise 'Eight first team players leave' - also a surprise Can't lose can he?
I followed it live on Facebook and was laughing my head of by our new Moroccan fans......so glad Boufal won goal of the season otherwise there would have been a cyber meltdown
I was there that day and Forest fans were bemused to start with. When we went 1-0 up and started sing, "1-0 and we're going down, 1-0 and we're going down" I remember them looking across in bemusement. They soon joined in with our fabulous spirit that day. We were near the front that day towards the corner flag and my son was in awe when Surman came over to take a corner just a few yards from us. Surreal day.
It was. Now try explaining your pride in your club that day to a fan of, for example, Man Utd. They don't get it and never will. It's one of the reasons I often feel smug as a Saints fan surrounded as I am by Liverpool and United fans in particular. That day I'd picked up a copy of a non-league newspaper which was seriously discussing how the Conference (as it was called at that time) would cope with having Southampton as a member. We were that close, folks. And now we discuss whether Van Dijk is really that good. Been an amazing journey to be where we are. Usually our player of the season buggers off within 5 minutes of getting the award. Oriel richly deserves these awards, and yes VVD would have pushed him, but this guy's contribution has been immense. Holding on to him is as vital as any other single factor in giving us the team we want for next season, but to come back to my theme, these are the good times. I'm just enjoying every minute.
Didn't hear it myself, but reported on here that Les Reed mentioned surprises this summer and discussed on Saintsweb that he said it would be a quiet summer. Any idea which it was or did he say both in different contexts?
