No, that's because you were the defending title holders and you had the CL in front of you.

Come the end of the Summer, you time in the sun will have evaporated, you'll have been crowned the worst defending champions in the history of modern football, and the only time you'll ever get to play in Europe again, is if the likes of Real or Bayern fancy an easy pre-season warm-up game.

Anyway, back to the OP. After 3 seasons of mediocrity, Dejan Lovren is rewarded with a lucrative new contract. Is he really the answer to Liverpool's piss-poor defence, or is this an even worse bit of business than a washed up Jose Fonte to West Ham?
