I concur that some people have difficulty in understanding tactics and the way Saints play. I also concur that in the main it usually is people who have not played at any decent level or even never played the game before. However the thing that tends to rattle me more is when you listen to some people who are probably in their forties or so, having a go at Saints, who consider themselves to be ardent Saints fans and pretend to know so much about the game. In this case both are season ticket holders. They were in some sort of discussion which was getting a bit heated, shall we say, with an older chap in the car park of my golf course. As they were talking about Saints and being very critical of the Saints defence in particular and in general the way we played against Crystal Palace I joined into the debate. Mainly because they were being so rude to the Gentleman, I got the impression it was because he was a lot older than them and they accused him of not knowing what he was talking about. Needless to say I backed the older gentleman, who I did know and asked them to calm down a bit, also offering a little suggestion as to how Saints played. To which they replied "what the f*** do you old geezers know about football?......... eh F*** all." With that another chap joined in the conversation seemingly coming out of nowhere. He said I'll tell you what they know about the game, then he proceeded to explain. You call yourself Saints fans and don't recognise an ex-player and a prolific goal scorer for Saints. (I've purposely left names out as don't have permission to disclose them) the other one could have signed for both Pompey and Saints but chose not to in his wisdom. It is true they recognised the last person to join the conversation. Another ex Saint midfielder although somewhat younger than us old codgers. Both ex Saints were full internationals at one time. The two blokes just looked at the last person to join the conversation, the person they argued with, then me.............the look on their faces was a picture. They just climbed into their cars saying something in-audible. Oh man that made my Day it really did............. The two ex professionals....One lived not too far away and the other had come down from the north for a holiday. What better people could you ask for to back you up in a discussion?............
