It's not hard.
The police monitor the flows and have detailed info on how many people and when are coming in.
If that is saved then comparisons and calculations are easy.

It is absolutely down to the small delay in being able to scan again. And sometimes glitches that increase the delay.

There also used to be more staff helping with the lines of people. Working hard to get people in faster reminding people to have tickets and passes ready it sounds daft but many people get to the front of the que not ready. .

Also spotting stoppages and dealing with them quicker

The same staff who were told not to check or stop adults getting in with child's tickets as this would slow the new system down and make bigger ques
