For depth. We don't want to be one injury away from having Carra and Soto as our only two fit centre-backs.
Both, we have the young prospects ( Kelly, Wisdom, Suma, Wilson) we need cover now but someone who can fill in immediattely as well.
First team. If Cahill joined he would be playing alongside Agger in my ideal defense. Carragher however offers unique traits that means he will always get games, and Agger is injury prone. I think we'd be looking at someone to make a first choice 3 with those 2, with Skrtel as a reliable 4th option behind them (and if we were in Europe he would get plenty of games, and would probably step into Carra's spot as he winds down). Some people reckon under kenny and Steve Clarke that Skrtel will be quality, but my doubts remain. He's good at what he does, but i think he's poor on the ball and sometimes gets confused when making decisions. He's good don't get me wrong, i'd just prefer to have another defender ahead of him.
I reckon it would be either Carra and Agger or Skrtel and Cahill thats provided we signed Cahill. I don't think Cahill is rugged, I reckon he''s the other type of centre back.
I think most Liverpool fans highly over-estimate our defenders! Carra has MAYBE 1-2 seasons left, Agger is good but made of glass, Soto isn't good enough, Skrtel is OK. I wouldn't go near throwing Kelly, or any of our young players in at centre back this season cos they're just not good enough yet! So, if (when) Agger gets injured, we're already down to Skrtel and Carra which isn't the best defence in the world but leaves us 1 injury away from being very exposed! Been going mad for a centre back all summer and doesn't look like it's going to happen
Only Carra & Agger are good enough imo and Kelly nees more experience before moving to that position. Cahill or Dann would provide competition.
Liverpool have had a great defencive record over the last 7 years or so though. Apart from Hyypia the players havnt changed to drastically.

We all know we're in the market for a centre back so who knows. If there is one position i'd like to see stay english it is the centre basck role... English centre backs seems to fair better in the short term then forgeiners (except Hyppia)
He was mentioned in the Telegraph rumours today, but I think the source was caughtoffside.com though....
Mertesaker has been linked mainly with Arsenal and not really us but this is the type of signing that we think is someone elses but then comes to us. Or Meireles who was suddenly linked and signed like that.
Cahill being linked to us since it looks like arsenal are afraid to pay decent money for positions they need reinforcing.
We've all been going on that we need a CB & LB and I'm sure Kenny knows exactly what is needed to make his squad complete. The owners have been generous so I think if Kenny thinks we need a CB now that we have got the LB sorted, I'm sure they would back him. If Kenny doesn't think we need anyone else and has seen enough in Carragher, Agger, Skrtel & Soto then I think we should all be in a position to trust his judgement - he hasn't given us a reason not to yet! We were pretty solid at the back last year when Kenny & Steve Clarke came in.
