I was going to tip up 2 horses of the morrow but unfortunately neither have made it into the list of declared runners (Barney from Tyanee and the Pipe’s Work for those with their notebooks handy). The 20k Graduation Chase at Kempton Park (4.15) has cut up so badly that only 2 now make it to post. Looks a lovely opportunity for Politolgue to ‘prep’ prior to Cheltenham though. At forecast odds of 1/5 though he’s not a bet for a simple working man such as Dr Sir Barney Chuckles OBE CBE VC MFI JLS. Good luck to those who do wager though.
Flushed with success in the Huntingdon finale today I am looking to follow up at Kempton tomorrow; The easy option would be to opt for Nicky the Needles runner Whatswrongwithyou. He practically owns this race and always has a decent one lined up for it. Little value for me there though at 7/4. The one with the best racecourse form is Sea Sovereign and at 8/1 is very backable each way. I can make a case for Pam Sly's debutante Haafapiece who is quite nicely bred and the yard is no stranger to bumper winners. However, the pick is THE HIKING VIKING @ 50/1 who comes from decent NH stock and is a half brother to a bumper winner. Trainer Paul Webber is slightly unfashionable these days but still buys very nice NH types and doesnt tend to put them in out of their depth. He is a huge price but I think we will get a decent run for our money.
Its time for my annual ****ing old git Hunter Chase whinge. 6 runner affair at Bangor tomorrow with runners from Tom George, Paul Nicholls, Colin Tizzard and Jonjo O'Neill. Their four runners have a total career earnings of over £560,000. Tomorrow they compete for a first prize of £1,317.20. What a sodding joke. I hope whichever of them wins the first prize donates it to racing welfare charity.
Have you seen the finer details re Whatswrongwithyou. Was purchased for just €900 as a foal and then sold for £44,000 as a 4YO. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the way to do it! Not backing it but am rather curious to see how he fares this afternoon. Is still owned by the forum’s favourite trainer and if I was being cynical then I’d say the plan would be to have him trained to the minute and ready to put up a mega performance this afternoon. And then sell him for a considerable sum to some wealthy, but rather gullible, rich owner. No idea if he’s ‘the latest reincarnation of Pegasus’ or merely ‘average’ but punters are seemly hedging towards the former as he’s, currently, a best price of just 13/8. Win, lose or draw a completely dappy price as you really have little idea as to the merits of so many of the animals in this heat – the above mentioned ‘reincarnation of Pegasus’ could be any one of about 10 of them! I suspect though that many punters are also going along the lines of Whatswrongwithyou being ready to run for him life and then sold, for a handsome profit, on the back of this performance.
3.20 Bangor Wellforth, strictly based on the C&D second in December; the 50/1 is, of course, a nice bonus. 1.40, 2.10 Kempton Small change Each Way Double on Grand Coureur and Ballymountain Boy Good Luck all ( Piazon, anyone? )
Ralphy Lad at 2.00 in the 13:30 at Southwell Grand Coureur at 9.00 in the 13:40 at Kempton Testify at 5.00 in the 13:50 at Bangor Kencumin at 2.63 in the 14:00 at Southwell
Stickler, if you don't mind I'm gonna oppose you in the bumper. Cup of ambition for Martin keighley, he does quite well in bumpers and this is well bred and cost a few bob. Another I like is brownviile for twisters at Bangor in the 3.20. Cheers.
He don't mind a bit, he's de Bumper King, and a worthy one, must admit. Just a bit jammy yesterday, beat mine by a short knacker (a head? Must have been a pinhead?). Two top jockeys (well, one) beaten by A.Wedge!
Cod in Parsley sauce, roasties and peas. 9/10. Quick afternoon quiz. A ‘Barney Bonus’ to the first correct answer. Which racehorse trainer shares their name with a current Coronation Street character.
Peanuts on these. A pinch of salt advised. all @ BSP So 3.00 Showdaisy Kem 3.10 Gevrey Chambertin Bang 3.20 Godsmejudge So 4.05 An Fear Ciuin N/c 8.15 Elysian Flyer Just one winner would suffice
As someone used to say on here, repeatedly, ‘more research required’. Poor show, you types. The answer is Pat Phelan. The one ‘on the cobbles’ is a right rogue by the way.
A son of Haafhd wins the bumper on soft .................... backed from 50s down to 33/1 too. Princess will love that
Annoying DK as my selection was a non runner and I think it's clear from the write up that the winner would have been my alternative. Had a saver on at 40/1, you will have to trust me on that score.
