Sebastian Coates has signed a permanent deal with Sporting Lisbon. The defender has been on loan at the with the Primeira Liga club since January 2016 and today they exercised the option to make the deal for the 26-year-old permanent. The Uruguayan made 32 appearances for the lads during his two spells on Wearside.
I thought he was rubbish, too slow and didn't make up for it by being strong. Bod is patchy but performs well alongside the Kone.
Shame we couldn't have sold him during the transfer window when we still had a chance to reinvest the money...
God it's an agonizing one but put it this way I don't think we'd have got 5m for Bod so I'd rather sell coates in that respect
Portugal's transfer window does not close until midnight on 1 Feb so the obviously waited to suit them. Either way he is gone.
The clause puts the buying club in control of the purchase unfortunately - we couldn't force them to commit to the deal as they had the option to buy!
Hope we have a sell on clause in there just in case, but I doubt it crossed there minds that he could turn out better than some on here think. I was quite impressed with him and do not think we have progressed that much since he left tbh.
