To anyone who seriously thinks SC should be sacked then do one and go back to supporting Man united or Chelsea. It's about time people realised that we aren't going to win every game, we are back to being a mediocre Championship side at best, like we were before our adventure in the premier league. I think the comment that made me laugh most is: "it was perhaps the worst pompey performance I have seen during 7 years of going to Fratton." I think this comment say's it all really. I think they should count themselves lucky that they didn't go before that 7 years. I think one of the worst performances i have seen at Fratton Park is losing 4-1 at home to Leyton Orient and that wasn't even that long ago. I also remember staying up on the last day of the season a few times. I started going to watch pompey during the mid-nineties and there wasn't much to cheer about but even i know that i didn't see the worst of it (70's etc) Do these people not know the history of the club? Maybe i have lowered my expectations because i have seen a lot of seasons where pompey have struggled and maybe these 'fans' have false expectations because they have seen pompey play so well in the past few years. I think SC has done a good job in turning us into potential playoff contenders, but even so i would be happy to finish mid-table again, and i can't see us going down. Sorry for the rant, just needed to get it off my chest!
Very well said PTID We are very fortunate to still be in existence as a club, when you consider what has gone on in the last few years. To my mind, Steve Cotterill did an incredible job last season, and continues to do so again this season. He deserves a medal for what he has achieved with extremely limited resources.
Having seen the title of the thread I came on here ready to have a right old rant at you for suggesting it! Thankfully I can just simply type "well said" for your comments. Also, to add to woopert's comment I think he should have had a medal just for coming to Fratton Park as manager when he did; at a time when the very future of the club was in serious doubt.
That was my intentions, might get a few more views Exactly he has done well out of a job that looked impossible. No one likes being knocked out of the cup, especially to a team that is two divisions below and it is a bit embarrassing, but it was obvious Barnet would be more up for this game and maybe our players attitudes were to blame for it a bit. There is absolutely no point in sacking SC especially now, with two weeks left of the transfer window. I have full faith that SC will bring in the players we need in the next few weeks and we will have a decent squad good enough to stay in this division.
I can't believe your fans would start getting on SC's back after only 2 games. I thought only Leeds fans did that! You'll be fine once you settle into your groove.
Very well said PTID. Last night's result was certainly a disappointing one and Barnet are a team we should always be looking to beat. Having said that, the cliché 'blessing in disguise' is very apt in my eyes, given the current size of the squad. I am already fearing how the loss of a couple of key players could affect us, so not being in the League Cup may prove to be beneficial.
Oh dear PTID - you've been reading that Snooze site again haven't you. I read it as well and ended up with a stonking headache. Came on here for a bit of light relief.
You'll be getting some reinforcements with a few loans, possibly from your old mate 'arry, in the next couple of weeks and then you will have half a chance of a decent season. Cotterill is the best manager you can expect atm, and you should be grateful that he is willing to do the job. He worked miracles last season and you should be ok this year too in my opinion IF you stick with SC.
How did he work miracles?? With one of the highest wage bills in the Championship p*mpey managed 13th, they out bid QPR for a player, the bloke is a gormless worzel.
Can you provide your evidence for "one of the highest wage bills in the Championship", because I cant find any stats on the web to support this. Also how much was paid to Richard Hughes, Micheal Brown and Tal Ben Haim who either couldn't play or wouldn't play? Because Ben Haim's wages alone are reportedly to be over 30,000 a week and we wanted to get rid of him but no one would take him and he refused to terminate his contract. Who did Portsmouth outbid QPR for? Portsmouth also had one of the smallest squads in the division last season - as indeed we still have now - and a few injuries and suspensions significantly weakens that teams, a long season with a small squad also increases fatigue and decreases performance due to inability to squad rotate. With the small squad he had Coterill did extremely well to get the Portsmouth to stay safely mid-table.
I have been supporting Pompey since the 90's and have been working abroad the last few years. Guess where! I was at the Leyton Orient FA cup game and took some of my mates who were scouse fans to sample the atmosphere for the day. Was embarrassing, but thats pompey!. I think SC has done very well in his time, limited budgets, HMRC etc etc. Lets not forget Birmingham were sniffing around in the summer. We have a shortage at the moment, but Pearce is coming back and the lads from international duty are back so this situation is a one off. We will pick up a few players on loan once the prem first choice 25 is sorted and im sure there are some irons in the fire with permanent transfers. touch wood!! anyways long story short we should lay off SC and see how we go
Just lay off Steve Cotterrill !!! He did a fantastic job last season , steadying a sinking ship . We should be grateful and thankful we still have a club to support. IMO , anyone who writes drivel about the club or its staff are not Pompey fans. If you do not like what you see , go and support another team .
There has always been this undercurrent of dissatisafaction with SC that seems to surface now and again. It's been around virtually since his appointment. Not sure what it's all about but he really should be given a fair crack to get things right now that there's a will and a little cash to spend. My only gripe would be his insistance in playing 4-5-1 ,especially at Fratton. He will tell you it's down to numbers. I'm not so sure. This system with Kitson up front on his own and Varney wide will not work. Kitson needs close support with another striker working off him, just like Kevin Doyle did during their promotion season a while back. Too often we are relying on long balls from Halford that gift possession back to the opposition. We need to start playing football as it's meant to be played. Fair play to Adkins up the road, he seems to have just about cracked that one.
