i think it should be pointed out that all this anger towards the youth and the 'they dont repsect there elders' malarky. Well the first person to be charged and plead guilty of looting is a 31 year old teacher - go figure!

Bringing the army out is a bad idea: it'll only encourage the rioters to take up firearms. That said, there is no justification or reasoning for what they're doing, so no other forms of restraint should be ruled out. I can understand why people are clammering for the water cannon and rubber bullets, but why don't we just let the police use their truncheons first? Get them to break the b*stards arms and legs then chuck them in jail, that should put a stop to things pretty quickly.

I had to drive into Leicester last night and the police were doing sweet FA; our country was a better place when they had the ability to physically teach people a lesson, rather than being forced to stand around and watch thuggery and vandalism like helpless spectators because the suits in Whitehall are terrified of the EU and their sodding human rights. Criminals should retain the right to life but forfeit all others: you riot and you should be fair game.

After the student protests, the police are scared to fight fire with fire after they were crucified in the media so I think that's why they're not using the physical power we'd expect. I don't think the water cannon's would work because for concentrated targets and fast moving targets they aren't that effective - they're more used on crowds of thousands. The rubber bullets would work though and I think we're getting to the stage where they have to be considered. I think the army should be used but only as a last resort if it gets totally out of hand and uncontrollable.

The laws make the police look stupid, thats why people dont respect them and behaving this way. The police have batons let them use them. If people class with the police let the Cops give them a kick in. If people are scared of police they will respect them. The longer this carries on the more of our Country and City gets destroyed. Its alright trying to contain them but they are smashing shops up and burning them down in the mean time. And that is someone's business and other people's jobs. People are getting killed through these acts of violence. They are just doing it because London did it and they now thinks it fun and they get a cheap kick out of ruining peoples lifes. Underneath the police's riot gear is also a human being, they dont deserve to have bricks throw at them and being peltied with petrol bombs etc. Let the police take the streets back through force and now try and contain the mob until it dies down as this could go on for a bit longer yet. How can people go back to their jobs if they are scared this is going to happen.

I think it would be best if all prem and footballl league matches are called off this weekend if the violence continues. It was good to see all the asians in London protected whats important to them, the longer the riots go on the more and more of the public will side with the police and chase the mob out

They should be rounded up, taken to the Ricoh, and made to watch Cov's home games for a whole season ... that feels right on so many different levels!

These scummers need hurting badly, preferably with the cat of nine tails they used to have in the olden days, 9 leather straps with 9 ball bearings attached to the ends. Straight across their backs or their arses repeatedly.

Scum of the earth, sewer rats that serve no purpose in society and that also applies the joke these kids have for parents, some are worse than the brats they have spawned on this earth.

Whoa easy there Fosse! I know there's been some suggestion of bringing the death penalty back, but this makes that pale into insignificance. Surely this kind of punishment is just too severe for a civilised society.

I´ve served in NI & water cannons do work... work for the person using them. It´s so funny watching one of them blasted off their feet. Rubber bullets & batton rounds work well with pick handles & a (don´t give a ****) snatch squad. You need to sit back observe who the ring leads are, take them out chase the rest & most will go home to mummy.

This is only a temp measure though as the UK´s youth from the age of 6 - 20 are F***ed in the head & the idiots who are now 21 - 30 bring their kids up so so wrong it´s unreal. It´s 2011, in 2050 we will live in a world like the film 'escape from NY'

NO RESPECT FOR THE COUNTRY, THE POLICE, THEIR PARENTS, THE VETS (of all wars) & NO RESPECT FOR THEMSELVES. So Mr PM go cut down on policing, the army, prisons & staff, the NHS & give the little runts of tomorrow a free for all

PS I hope the reading game goes a head but I doubt it... THANKS YOUTH. :emoticon-0121-angry

The Yobs have attacked Police dogs, fire engine, fireman and members of the public. They are out on control and the police need to show them whos boss. Rubber bullets and a few good kick ins will do that

Didn't spot any banners?! just flat screen and designer goods on TV. A good old fashion show of a wooden stick like we use to get when we stood out of line in school was and sent to the headmaster does the trick! no one was interested in your reasons just dealt with and didnt occur again.

To may bloody do gooders running this Great Country!!

TBH I would imagine that they are not collecting these items to wear!

I would guess you could look on ebay if you would like to reclaim any items that have been lifted?

Some of the comments on this thread are a bit silly and a bit Daily Mail-esque, knee-jerkism. Ultimately you don't solve one act of violence by committing another against them, that is why vigilantism does not work. What is needed with this situation is calm, intelligent heads and not hot-headed right-wing utopia.

I would personally have no qualms about using water cannons, but as has been said they wouldn't really have any effect on small crowds. Rubber bullets should be a last ditch resort if rioters and looters are seen to be close to committing arson, live rounds is a no-go.

As for what has caused this, I think probably 75% of it is simple vandalism and greed; they saw on Saturday that people could 'get away' with looting and rioting, so they jumped on the bandwagon. We live in a commercialised society whereby getting the newest games console or the latest pair of Nike trainers is what makes one person better than the other. Therefore when it seemed they had the opportunity to steal these items, they did it.

As for the other 25%, i think it is a whole range of aspects; bad parenting, poor morals and standards, a lack of positive role models, negative role models, lack of SUITABLE discipline, severe poverty, disengagement from society and politics, gang culture, lack of employment opportunities, no aspirations, poor education, welfare dependency, neglect, living standards, poor environment, seeing the rich get richer, tax evasion and avoidance, hectic family lives, commercialisation and sexualisation of children, drugs, alcohol, the list could go on. There is no point just blaming one or two things, it's the whole damn situation our society finds itself in, and which the Conservatives and New Labour did not bother to try and solve. It'll take perhaps another generation to sort these problems out.

Oh, and before anyone tries and blames all these ills on 'today's youth', just remember that 99%, myself included, of young people are NOT involved in this and utterly condemn it. This is a small minority of people who have sick minds and have been abandoned by society who are doing this, not the average 14-24 year old. Riots will always happen; they have happened for generations, it is not a new thing.

P.S. For those syaing 'bring in the army'; what exactly would that achieve? Are you seriously suggesting allowing tanks and weapons on the streets of our country just to help disperse a bunch of idiotic thugs? Because without their weapons, the army aren't really going to give any more help than the police would. The army are not superheroes, they cannot solve all our problems!

The army doesnt want them and it is somewhat an insult to the army and our brave soldiers to associate these twats with our professional fighting elite. We'd be the laughing stockof the military world having these sulking hoodies go awol and bitching that it's too hot in Afghanistan.
