Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he will accept a Football Association misconduct charge for his behaviour during the 2-1 league win over Burnley. Wenger, 67, was charged with verbally abusing and pushing fourth official Anthony Taylor after being sent off in the closing stages of the game. He had been dismissed for reacting angrily to a 93rd-minute penalty given to Burnley, who trailed 1-0. Wenger, who later apologised, says he will request a personal FA hearing. "I've said what I have publicly and the rest will be more discreet," he said. "I don't know if I will be punished and how I will be punished. The only thing I can say is that when I was sent off I was surprised and then I was in the tunnel which is where I thought I could be." After being sent to the stands by referee Jon Moss, Wenger moved away from the pitch but stood at the tunnel entrance and refused to move as he tried to watch the remaining few minutes of Sunday's match. As Taylor encouraged him to move away, Wenger was seen to push back against him. When asked if he would accept the charge, Wenger said: "Yes. I am big enough to stand up for what I do. When I don't behave like I think I should behave, I am big enough to say I am not right. I'm a passionate guy and I believe that I am completely committed in my job and want to win football games." In 2012, then-Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was fined £20,000 and given a two-match touchline ban for pushing an assistant referee during a match against Tottenham. (BBC Football website) "I don't know if I will be punished..." Utterly unbelievable! It's like he thinks there's one rule for everyone else and then a special rule for him! I think the FA should throw the book at him. What do you lads think? You can demonstrate your disapproval by voting for the severest sanction.
You forgot to post on the Southampton thread as Saints last night HIAG. If you're going to try and pull off a sock account, at least try and make it seem genuine.
True. The saints fan also seem to hate on Leicester due to the Van Diik injury so I thought Saints would have had something to say....obviously HAIG pays so little attention to S'ton that he missed an opportunity there
HIAG pays little attention to football, full stop. If it's not in the BBC gossip pages, then he won't have a clue about it.
Indeed. Saints have just had the biggest night in their history for a generation, and yet HIAG's sock is nowhere to be seen, poor sock usage. He's a rank amateur.
Given the amount of effort HIAG put into pretending to be A87, you would have thought he'd paid a bit more attention to his real sock account.
I don't want to know what HIAG uses his sock for... Or what he mops up with it. As for how long Wenger should be banned... ... As long as it takes for Liverpool to climb above them again... So 2022.
REDKNAPP SAYS WHAT EVERY OTHER NEUTRAL IS THINKING... Arsene Wenger spends too much time whining at fourth officials. Watch him on the touchline: when he gets up from his seat, it is usually to have a moan rather than pass on instructions to his players. Arsene gets upset a lot but what can the fourth official do? He’s just standing there acting as a sounding board for both managers, he’s not refereeing the game. They take the brunt of the anger and in Arsene’s case, he often gets irate with them but it is no good shouting and moaning at someone who isn’t responsible for what you think is going wrong. I remember when he first arrived in England and everybody said he was like a chess professor, studying every move and never took his eyes off the game while all the other managers were jumping around and screaming. After a couple of years here, he started going through periods when he’d lose a few games. People would talk about other managers being maniacs but he ended up being one of the biggest maniacs of all. Look at his record, he’s had some bust-ups. Jose Mourinho, Martin Jol, getting sent to the stands at Manchester United — he seems to be on the edge a lot. Maybe he lets his frustrations out that way because he doesn’t often get too aggressive with his players. please log in to view this image © Provided by Evening Standard Limited What he did against Burnley was unacceptable. His players made mistakes, not the officials. Unfortunately for him, Francis Coquelin was clumsy and the referee made the right decision in awarding a penalty. They had been put under pressure by Granit Xhaka, who needs to stop acting like an idiot — how many times is he going to get himself sent off? None of that is the fourth official’s fault. Arsene was lucky that the stewards were there because in that moment, he’d lost it. If he could have got to the fourth official, there would have been more contact. Now he finds himself waiting to find out the FA’s punishment and although I haven’t been charged in the same way by the FA too often, I have been in front of a panel to argue my case. After I was fined a couple of times when I was at Bournemouth as a young manager, I thought ‘hang on, that’s my holiday gone for this year.’ I wasn’t earning much and picking up fines for things I said had a real effect on me so I tried to stop doing it. I still had my moments when I was caught up in the heat of things but I always stuck to the belief that it was pointless trying to argue with them, especially fourth officials. We can’t all be losing our heads. It is only going to get you in trouble, even if they have made an honest mistake. Kids watch every move players and managers make. Referees need to be respected for that message to filter down to the grassroots game. I see referees at the park on Sundays getting abused. They deserve a medal, coming down to be abused by two pub teams who forget they play for the Dog and Duck and think they are Lionel Messi. It’s wrong and we have to set an example. If the Arsenal manager can get away with it, then the Dog and Duck manager will think the same. I like and respect Arsene but he’s going to have to take his punishment. A stadium ban would be worse, of course, as Arsene will want to be there but Arsenal keep talking about how much mental strength and resilience they’ve got. Without their manager there, now’s the time to show it. (Harry Redknapp, writing in the Evening Standard Online)
Poor Harry Redknapp, he still has not got over that time he was about 14 points ahead of us at the end of March, and still finished below us, i dont think he has ever recovered from it, in fact it pretty much ended his career.
Don't care who's tugging what. Wenger should be done for attempted murder imo. Five years is me being very lenient.
...very grown up ...you seem a little bitter? ...has something happened this week to cause you angst? ... perhaps a footballing reality check?
