    I went on a quest when I lived in Belgium to find his fruit and veg shop.

    I left Brussels armed with a bag full of Duvel and a heart full of admiration for the Belgian colossus.

    I arrived in Charleroi (his last club) by train after consuming 2 Duvel and staggered round the city asking if anyone knew Phillipe Albert. Many did but no-one knew where he was or where his shop was.

    After a few hours and a few more Duvel I took the train to his home town of Bouillon which was lovely. By now I was out of beer and hopes were fading that I'd meet the great man.

    I walked round the town and slurred in terrible French if they knew the whereabouts of the Belgian Mushroom of Newcastle United? No-one could help me.

    I broke down at the train station in the evening and cried tears of beer and despair.

    I'd failed.

    Happy Birthday. Classy beyond belief. Great drinker too! I remember going into Legends one night and the whole team were there. Darren Peacock was supposedly doing a party trick involving his knob and a cue ball, Clarkie and Watto staggered through paralytic, Barton and Bez were being bell ends with the bar staff, but two guys stood out as being a little more sober and having a little more class. Mr Phillipe Albert and Mr Shaka Hislop. Now I can't remember at what point in those years it was at, but I remember thinking Shaka hadn't been there long. He stood quietly in the corner clasping his bottle of beer, trying and failing to shrink into the background. Wor Phillipe? Knocking back bottles of beer like they were going out of fashion, looking none the worse for it and still managing to spend time with revellers wanting photos and 2mins with the great man.

    I wish I'd known he owned a fruit and veg shop when I lived in Brussels, I'd have probably spent my last euro trying to track it down.
