I take all t I take all of these rumours with a pinch of salt, but at the same time no smoke without fire. MLT has tweeted about Fonte not telling the truth, you had Bertrand and Fonte go after Hojbjerg when subbed in the WBA game. Bertrand so I'll on Monday that he could only be a sub??? Guess we will tell if the players are behind him on Saturday and Wednesday next week. But then again the club had the chance to get rid of Black with the bung stories, but didn't?
The way I see it, that some of our players have had their heads turned, when they join up with their countries squads, and our told they could do soooo much better, than playing for "little old Southampton" You can imagine the likes of Rooney, Gerrard, Ronaldo etc doing so!
I agree Ian, although I'm not sure he is the best foreign servant this club has had since Ivan Golac. That French chap, Le Tissier was quite good......
Oh Jose, when you are loved by a town, when you accept the captaincy of their team, when you have more money than I could ever dream of, why would you do that? You'll never walk alone again in Southampton where you could have been a hero and Fran has removed your poster from above her bed!
I've just listened to Les' interview, and (unless Les has done another interview) I personally don't at all interpret that as him saying that Fonte would stay as captain. "We would expect him to play the second half of the season in that manner". I interpret that as Les referring to Fonte being professional and playing well, as opposed to when he then led onto saying that Fonte is our captain. Granted, he certainly didn't say that he wouldn't stay on.
I think he was Frenchish, laid back, with the air of c'est la vie', Rodney. He certainly didn't play like an English player of the time.
I care not a jot for all of the behind the scenes politics that blights football these days. All I can say is that Fonte is a bona fide saints legend in my eyes and I'll be sorry to see him go. Maybe he'll finish up with a move back to Portugal or something. Wishful thinking I shouldn't wonder, as I assume he'll go to another premiership club.
It's a shame that there will be a parting of ways in less than happy circumstances, but quite a few fans were questioning how long he'd play for us anyway. I could see him playing this year, then playing less over the next season. Was surprised to see him dropped so often under Puel, but he hasn't been the leader he was this season anyway.
Very much the end of an era. It's a shame he's leaving like this and he always seemed to have bought into "The Project" more than anyone else but I hoped we'd sign someone to challenge/replace him last summer so I won't be too unhappy if he goes (assuming he's replaced). His behaviour hasn't been too bad really. Perhaps a few untrue stories about contracts but there's always got to be some sort of justification in these situations and at least he had the decency to submit a transfer request instead of just acting like a **** behind the scenes - threatening to refuse to play etc. There may be a similarity to Lambert as well - there's a chance he's not going to be a fixture in the side for much longer and he may as well get paid a massive salary to sit on the bench elsewhere.
