Smith has been involved in pre-season a disturbing amount.

    14 - Gabriel Obertan's PL career: 14 games, 4 starts, 0 goal, 0 assist, 4 shots on target, 7 off target. Magpie.

We had no choice to be fair, no Cabaye, Barton or Guthrie and didnt want to give Gosling loads of games on the back of that injury.

Not too bothered by that, 4 games is not enough to base opinions on.

Just like the time Smith managed to hold off the 3-0 lead we had at home to WBA, he has the opposite effect by effecting the whole team where we cannot hold onto the ball, whereas Guthrie was passing the ball and keeping posesion. That's what you need in that situation, not Smith who just allows the opposition to attack. If Smith starts a game next year I will be hugely disappointed in Pardew, considering how many cm we have.

spot on. we dont neeed more than 25 so this is the right way to do it!!

if we can get xisco and smith off the books, roughly £100K+ a week that will mean we will have more space in our 25 man squad and space within our wage structure too, that would allow us to bring in some good signings before window closes

  7. Raylor's natural position aint RB. His tackling is ****, and he doesn't looked comfortable in that area. His best sparks come from midfield. Hopefully he wont have to start a PL game next season, but if we have the same luck with injuries/suspensions as last season, we'll need Raylor.

Raylor has also proven himself worthy of a start in cup games. He scored some crackers vs Chelsea and Accrington.

Raylor has his uses and i doubt he's getting more than 15k a week.

He has his uses but if we got offered a new signing there is a very strong chance I'd pick the signing over Raylor for a squad space.

He plays RB more often than not was my point. That's where he played in the cup games. Even with injuries I can't see him starting a game realistically. He's about 7th choice winger and 8th choice CM.

But we have room for 1 more... and Perch, Xisco, Smith and Raylor are wastes of squad space.

When we lost to Villa last season, the only time we looked half threatening was when Ryan Taylor came on. I definately wouldn't be selling him, good cover in CM and RM (and RB if needed although not ideal).

I'm happy enough with Obertan, wasn't really impressed when the rumours started but I say give the bloke a chance. Now a striker please.

Need a club willing to buy them (or take them), able to offer enough wages, and for the players themselves to agree to the move. Can you seriously see anyone willing to match Xisco/Smith's wages? I'm sure Smith's even said that he's not moving until the end of his contract.

i'd assume that room is for the fabled striker we're still after. Otherwise, it makes perfect sense from MA's point of view to tell Pardew; "you want a new defender? get rid of one of the crap ones first", since we'd already have a squad of 25 (assuming a striker is signed), he won't want to be paying wages of players that are unable to play.

no it's down to squad size,25 squad members we're up to 24 now (i think) leaving room for the striker we've been after and if we get the LB jose is gone
might get one or two going on loan xisco being one of them

This. We all know the relative merits or lack of them of Smith, Perch, Xisco and Raylor but the Fat man ain't gonna pay wages for guys to sit on their ar$e, so get rid and replace. But they're crap so no-one wants them.

I also really enjoy the way Smith repeatedly gives away free kicks around our 18 yard box because he's too slow for the prem. It really releaves pressure!!!

this is probably the main reason barton/nolan weren't offered 5 yr deals and our policy to buy young, players like smith on huge wages and just not up to the job
