I said to a friend after Rick Parfitt died yesterday that I wouldn't be surprised if there was another celebrity death before the end of the year. I never imagined that it would be George Michael... he was the same age as me
The 80's generation of singers is taking a beating. Mercury, Prince, Bowie, Status Quo, Michael. RIP Michael
OMG, Still in shock. I think most 'children' of the 80s will agree. GM a total 80s icon, whatever his demons or what he ended up acting like. A little older than me, the same age as the wife. 2016, just do one now, you've had your 'fun'. A musical genius, and will be sadly missed.
Pigging 2016. Watching the Christmas TOTPs etc over the last few days I had to explain to my wife why 'Last Christmas' always made me smile. Though really not my 'type' of music it has a sense of fun and cheesey bravado which GM and Wham just radiated in their early years. I and my chum Rich's drunken impression of Wham at the Graylingwell Hospital Social Club in 1984 remains one of my most treasured memories, if leaving several people scarred for life. I loved Status Quo in the 70's Saw them live at the Gaumont, did the silly dance and dodged the bits of chair being thrown. Their 'live' ep from that period shows Rick and them in their pomp, hard rocking before the cabaret set in. Always think it's even more hard for bereaved friends and family when loved ones go around Christmas, so thoughts for them and a quick blast of 'In my chair' to wake the kids up this morning.
Thing I loved most about George - he took his very public "shaming" from the tabloids and turned it into a brilliant number one single. That's genius. He was a superb songwriter and singer. Check out this rehearsal for the Freddie Mercury tribute, with Bowie watching on from the sidelines -
Seems like people are rushing to get in before the New Year. 2016 obviously a fashionable year to die.
Does anyone have any recommendations for the Steam Winter Sale? Of the games I had considered, one I discovered didn't have a save game feature, one doesn't have any leveling possibilities and apparently the online community is dead (and it's an online only game), one seems like a really obvious console port (right down to instructions to use the shoulder button to do whatever) and the other one, Salt, I'm still on the fence about... I ideally want something cheap, and with good replayability. So far I've bought Cities: Skylines, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds and Star Wars Empire at War (the space battles are epic in the latter)
And Michael Jackson of course, who would've thought that Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and The Stones would outlast them all? Bowie and Prince are still my personal greatest losses, but Rick and George made massive contributions to British music, RIP to them both...
