yeah but thats a bit like #doingaLukaku
i'm working on the theory that as an individual he had a bigger impact on the team than Messi has done in the only straight comparison.

Messi has got the team to 3 finals. Not his fault the likes of Higuain have missed very presentable chances to win the tournaments.

I seem to remember Messi missing a pretty good chance in the World Cup final too. Also missed a pen in last Copa final shootout.

I disagree about him getting them to the final of last world cup too... Argentinas defence got them to that final.

The point on his international career is a valid one. You say record goalscorer but I bet you don't consider Rooney one of our greatest? ;)

    Maradona the greatest ever imo.

Lets discount everything Messi's ever done because he plays in a good team. Okay.

How funny are some of those arsenal fan tv clips btw. Never really watch them but just watching one now after the City game.. 1 guy just shouting angry nonsence about same **** every year while a diff guy is trying to be interviewed, and that guy just shouting back "don't swear at me" about 600 times <laugh>

Imagine knowing these people and watching that, how embarrassing lol

I don't think anyone is disputing that - just that there are other valid contenders for "best ever".
It's a pointless argument, like most in football, tbh.

Messi is no doubt a special player and arguably one of the best in the world and in history.

But for me - the greatest players are the ones that make those around them better. Messi has done that albeit with existing world class players.

Maradona did it for Argentina and Napoli (I could be wrong but I'd say the sides maradona played in are weaker than the sides Messi has played in).

Ronaldo (the real one) is the best striker I've seen - he was scoring goals against world class defences both at domestic and international levels. The standard of defending he faces was light years ahead of what either Messi and c ronaldo have faced.

A lot of emphasis is on attsckers but for me, maldini is arguably one of the greatest. The longevity of his career and at such a high level is astounding.

Messi and Ronaldo are no doubt the best two footballers of this generation and two of the top 4 or 5 of all time. We could make certainly make a case for messi being the best of all time.

But for me it has to be Maradona. Both for his footballing skills and his achievements. Messi made impressive teams even better. Same as Ronaldo.but without Maradona none of the teams he played for would have come near their trophies.

There can be no argument that Napoli only won the Italian league because of maradona and an otherwise ordinary Argentina team winning the World Cup because of him. Messi could have elevated an ordinary team to the very top but we will never know.

Maradona for me as amazing messi is.

As for ronaldo vs Messi, Messi all the time. I hate the argument that Messi was surrounded by world class players as if Ronaldo was somehow playing with plodders.
