When asked about the signing of Obertan Pardew stated that he wanted more pace in the side, and he wanted to improve our counter-attacking play. Does this mean we might actually leave a man up whilst defending corners? This has bugged me for ages, and it hasn't just been Pardew. If we leave someone up, they have to bring somebody back - it's not rocket science.

Be it Marveaux, Jonas, Ben Arfa, Obertan or anybody else, I hope we see us leave somebody up when we're defending corners next year.

We used to have Routledge or Lover but if the ball ever did get cleared to them they didnt have the strength to win it. If we had Ben Arfa, Marveaux and Obertan starting we'd be devastating on the counter attack.

And Taylor/Willo, Colo, Ba/Shola etc. should have the height to get it away from the box!

The same happened on Saturday, even then they all came back, so it meant even more midfielders/defenders could swamp the penalty area. I think one of the problems with out football is that our players (i.e. British players) are too thick to play decent football.

I remember once last season we left Gutierrez up there.

    Almost got a standing ovation.

He's great at giving us time to re=organise. After corners we should send him on a mazy run with the intent of getting fouled and/or moving the ball as far away from our box without losing it as possible.

This sounds like a very plausible tactic. he's incredibly hard to get the ball off without bringing him down. he'd get you into the 3rd quarter of the pitch probably about 80% of the time if he got the ball down at his feet.

if we leave one player up it immediately means they have to put two back to cover him, if we leave 2 up then they send back 3. basic stuff and i'm not really sure why we dont do it. He must do this season though considering the style of play it looks like we'll be implementing

Good article, hitting teams on the break is something we should be looking at doing with pace in the side now. It might just be me but I am actually excited about the signing of Obertan, I think given a run in the side and games week in week out he will be devastating. Just hope I am right!!

It always seems crazy to me that all the players pull back for a corner and invite pressure along with crowding the box actually making it harder to defend, I would pull 3 players or even 4 out of the box with 2 pushed up onto the halfway line and 2 maybe 5 yards out of the box, the other team would have to respond and pull players out as well or face the possibility of being overrun.

The Jonas goal against Wolve is a good example of counter attacking play from a corner

Agree with you's, Gutierrez is the best player to counter with from a corner.

Gutierrez is the best if they have 2 or 3 back but if they just had one I'd fancy Obertan to just go right round him. Unbelievably quick player.

I guess, they usually have more than one player back like. Is Obertan's shooting any good?

I'd say no, going off his goal record. He's meant to be good from outside the box, scored a cracker for Man U in pre season.
