I wouldn't bring up a purely American topic on a forum based in England, but one of the candidates may be of interest to you Brits. The USMNT presently has an interim manager and plans are to hire a permanent manager in the new year. One of the names which has come up is Louis Van Gaal. Though I don't see him as a fit here, he has an impressive resume and is an intriguing candidate for the job.

The USMNT is in need of a complete makeover after the World Cub qualifying debacle and a youth movement is in order. No telling what we'll see on the pitch at Wembley on November 15, but it probably won't be pretty.

Not an acronym but an initialism.

Acronyms are abbreviations that are pronounced as words. Initialism is an abbreviation where you sound out the letters individually to form the word like FBI and here with USMNT.

    I agree with your definition.

However, I'm sure I've come across at least one 'style guide' previously that has defined acronyms as defined by Barca.

That sounds like good summation of it. Being an oldie I come from a simpler age before organisations, especially government ones, went to great efforts, convoluted ones at times, to come up with snappy sets of initials you can use as words, DEFRA, OFSTED etc. It takes two to QUANGO.

    In Atlanta, it's Saw-ker
    In Minneapolis, it's Soy-ker

    You need Steve Bruce.

He’d get you promoted to the big boys table.
