I was going back about 50 years. And while he never got a decent number of England caps due to better keepers like Banks, I think you do the guy a disservice. He was a good goalie behind a weak team in the early 70's.
The Utd team of the early 70's was basically the European Cup winning team, with the addition of the likes of Sam Macilroy, Jim Holton and Wyn Davies. He was as much part of Utd's drop to division 2 as the rest of the players that outstayed their time at OT. Just my opinion like, but I'm hardly likely to praise Utd or their players anyway.
Monty was a much better keeper than Stepney so was Pat Jennings and maybe Lawrenson at Liverpool, Stepney was a over hyped piss head and yeah, he went down with a very bad team in 74.. #TommyDochertysworstmoment..
Yeah, I only mentioned English keepers but he WAS better than Gary Sprake, David Harvey, Gordon West(hello Tobes )
Gordon West ate a lot of fish by all accounts and ended up heavier than Sprake, they reckoned in the day that he could clear 3 or 4 tins of Tuna chunks, ironic really that he ended up looking like one.. Harvey was ok for a season but like Mervyn Day, he was vastly overrated.. You know what, the best goalkeeper performance I have ever seen was as a 10 year old watching the great Lisbon Lions, Celtic beating Inter Milan.. Ronnie (the cat) Simpson was pure class all the way through their success that year..
Yeah, Ronnie was a superb keeper, amazing that he and the rest of the Lisbon Lions were all born within 20 miles of Celtic Park.
Not yet...he was on the 'what are you doing thread' a few minutes ago...pondering on starting a thread about Luke Shaw
I don't post here so I can't wind @Matth_2014 up, oh and btw, Luke Shaw is ****e, seen better players at grass roots, like Paul Slug (he ain't slow) and Kevin 'the swerve' Snailston... One's for the future these lads, no ****ing around, typical 'have it' full backs.. Stand their rounds as well (hic)
I don’t, I remember his debut against Liverpool, He was man of the match, It went downhill after thst though.
