Can only see humiliation with the current lot and if some miracle we got in the Prem we would be worse than Swindon or Derby so what would be the point?

Totally agree. Promotion would be a total embarrassment with the players we currently have. And we know from experience there would be no investment to strengthen the squad.

But I feel we're between a rock and a hard place. If we did get promoted what I've said above applies, but, if we don't go up, our best players will be sold during the summer, so we face the prospect of another championship campaign with less than what we currently have. Seeing that they have been so inconsistent this season, anything less could well see us in a relegation fight next season.

Either way , a relegation battle could be on the cards. Our only hope is that Madejski finds his buyer.

But what is the alternative? There is was a similar discussion on the Saints forum, only it was about how it would be great to challenge for a Champions league place, but people considered the Europa League waste of time and that we would be better not to get there. Well, perhaps that is true, but in football, you either move forwards or you go backwards. What are you suggesting? Get to the play-offs and throw the games? The parachute money alone would give any relegated team a huge advantage the following season. Teams play every game to win. You end up where you deserve to be.

I don't disagree with any of that Channonfodder, but there has to be a point where you take a good hard look at what your club realistically has to offer.

Of course we all want the best for our clubs. Many of us older Reading fans can remember the bad old days in the third and fourth divisions, so what we have achieved in the last 20 years has been beyond many peoples wildest dreams, mine included.

The two forays we've had into the premiership were ended as a direct result of lack of investment in the squad, pure and simple. Just a little more ambition would have prevented our first relegation. The second occasion, last year, we now know was largely down to the problems within the club. But, as I said in my first post, if we get promoted, past experience tells us that there will be no great investment to strengthen the squad and give us a fighting chance of survival. And if we don't get promoted, our best players will be sold.

The man I feel most sorry for in all of this is Adkins. He must have been been sold a massive pup to ever have agreed to come to Reading. If we don't go up, and we do end up selling what few decent players we have, I can see him walking while his reputation is still intact.

Well if anyone is left in any doubt about whether it would be a good thing for us to make the play offs, or not, last nights debacle should have gone some way to helping them make up their minds.

Another clueless home performance against a club who had only won six games all season before last night.
