Phil Neville and Clarke Carlisle should be higher. Carlisle really is a gormless moron.

I don't mind Townsend too much, but it doesn't help that he is paired with that idiot Tyldesley.

Good description of Carlisle, he is completely without gorm.

Did you know....gorm is from an Old English word (derived from Norse) meaning sense or heed. Now only survives in 'gormless' #interestingfact :)

Yes, I'm much of the same opinion. Watching as little as I could get away with of the last two England games [and yet know what was going on] I heard the fawning, respectful nature of Clive Tyldesley. He gently took the piss out of both opposition teams, largely because of their relative poor status in World football, but didn't criticise England for a microsecond. Commentators are meant to reflect a performance. You'd think all was rosy in the England garden if you listen to Tyldesley.

Townsend gets the reflected flak, I think. He's no great shakes himself, but pair him with somebody who can commentate properly, is my opinion.

EDIT: Next time England play, I'll listen to Alan Green if he's on Radio 5. That'll make a change.

Ah, that must be where I heard it then, I'm old and I'm English.

I can't stand that blowhard* either. I do realise that not liking hardly anyone on the telly or radio says as much about me as it does them.

*Old Anglo Saxon word meaning "complete tosser".

I like Alan Green. Yes, he got the colour of our away kit wrong when we played Arsenal but he was very complimentary of us.

Bring back Peter Brackley. He is the best commentator out and I used to like Chris Waddle co-commentating.

I hate Townsend commentating really riles me when he says something happened, then replays clearly show it didn't yet he confirms his initial suggestion like 'Looked like that came off the San Marino player there' replay shows it didn't 'yep took a slight deflection, should've been a corner' He does it all the time for fouls, corners, penalties...............inbetween referring to goal in the singular as goals.

I hope they bring Robot Wars back to our screens too so they can f** off Jonathan Pierce shouting his way through matches.

I quite like Green as well. Maybe it's the use of phrases such as, "this game is dire!" which makes me warm to him?

In my head I read that as Gary Neville for a second and was quite perplexed.

Poor Phil, he doesn't quite match up to his brother when it comes to football - on and off the pitch!

They are all ****. Amazes me how ex-players have spent their entire life in the game & yet none of them can convey anything intelligent or insightful about it. It's just all the same old cliches & white noise.

This is true, unlike rugby where everyone seems to be able to talk intelligently about it.

I put it down to good coaching from a young age and a proper understanding of the game. Plus a few brain cells of course.

I also dislike Tyldesley and dont much like Townsend either, as commentator/co-commentator.
I detest Alan Green as a person and a commentator - met him at a function some years ago and talk about full of himself, he is so full of self importance for a bloody football commentator !
Best commentator ever imo was the late Peter Jones - listened to so many games on which he was commentating on the BBC World Service when away at sea, and he could paint a fantastic picture of the game and the players involved. Peter Brackley was also very good.

Totally agree, especially with Niall Quinn. His bias to old teams is cringey bad!

There are very commentators I like. Owen is a bit of a nob, Townsend is horrific.

Surprise surprise but I actually think Adam Blackmore is a good commentator. He could easily step up to the nationals.

Not so sure about Dave Merrington though, although he's funny as the local radio's, biased 'expert'.
