did anyone else watch the match this afternoon between Cirstea and Raducana, I was watching the tour switched over in adverts and was mesmerised with her agility and shots as she battled from 3-3 first set to 7-5 winner in second. Apparently still waiting for her A level results! to boot!!!
of course sport is littered with fallers by the wayside of budding teenagers, lets hope she is not one of them!

it is, a real blow but sometimes it can be a good thing should the injury not be a bad one. She was a late? wild card and is very young, at 18 physically probably underdeveloped. Some of her last round serves speed wise were right up there and the "moment" can sometimes overdo it... and in a tournament like an open recovery time is not that long!

I'm not a tennis fan but what a brilliant performance, what a refreshing personality I am now a big fan, I want her to win the title but she has already done it for me, great girl, great future.

I’m not watching it, I’ve only sat down once to watch her, and she went off injured. So I don’t want to curse her.

How nice to see 2 young tennis players on the big stage but I will have divided feelings because her opponent is Canadian. The whole of Canada will be watching to see how Leylah Fernandez performs in the final and to be quite frank they are both winners in my books due to their dedication to tennis and having a never quit attitude. Both of their performances to get to this point is admirable, if not outstanding, and I wish them both the best of luck and it's really a shame that one will lose.

is that done on seeds... like seed 100 you get a chance seed 101 you don't? but reaching a certain stage in a previous open /slam you get an invite?

Emma was born in Canada to a Chinese mother and Romanian father.
Looks like you're on a 'win win'.

Think so, but something like ex amount seeded (using your 100) given a bye to first round. Then you have players like Murray who was previous high ranking but injured for nearly a year but entered one of the Grand Slams (I think Australian) they get bye’s.
I think that rule changed from when Borg was injured following his defeat to McEnroe and was told he had to qualify for the next Wimbledon so refused to enter. But I was young then so could be totally wrong.
Then next qualifiers but I think they are invited to qualify not seeded. So 101 may not be invited to qualify. Hence you get a lot of home grown qualifiers.

I used to be bored by ladies tennis but that was something else! The athleticism of both players was amazing and shows that the women’s game has come on in leaps and bounds over the years.
How composed they both were in the after match interviews as well! Incredible!!

My heartfelt congratulations to you Emma because you made this ex-pat thrilled to see the title go to my birth country and you deserved your victory. At the same time my Canadian heart was slightly damaged but I know all of Canada is so proud of Leylah's performance and all could see that this young lady was not going to quit.

Both sides of the Atlantic Ocean can rest peacefully tonight in the full knowledge that both players gave of their best but in the end Emma prevailed. One of the nicest comments came from Chris Evert when she said how socially aware both Leylah and Emma were in their post match speeches and if they are the future of tennis then bring it on. :emoticon-0148-yes:
