MARTIN OâNeill has sympathy with Connor Wickhamâs plight â and has backed the Sunderland striker to come good once he returns to fitness. The 19-year-old has been sidelined for several weeks now by an ankle injury which will keep him out of tomorrowâs game at Fulham and looks to have ended his season prematurely. But even when he was fully fit, the teenager was struggling to make the impact expected of a player Sunderland paid £8million for last summer. It is still hoped Wickham will develop into a Premier League star over the next season or two. However, OâNeill feels that the only way he is likely to start to deliver on his raw talent is if he plays games regularly â an opportunity he has not been able to get at Sunderland so far. âIt has been very difficult for Connor because since Iâve been here it has been stop-start for him,â said the Black Cats boss. âItâs as much to do with injuries as anything else. âIâm quite sure Connor would benefit from a real run in the team. âBut that is something â because of the nature of our position in December, January and a good part of February â we couldnât afford, that luxury of allowing players to play four or five games to bed themselves in.â Such talk will only fuel speculation that Wickham could be heading out on a season-long, or half-season-long loan when the new season gets under way. Former club Ipswich has been mooted as his most likely destination should he be allowed to hone his skills away from the Stadium of Light. However, OâNeill has held the door open for the clubâs developing players to stake their Sunderland claims ahead of the new campaign beginning. âIt has been a problem for us in giving our younger players opportunities â specifically because our league position did not allow that,â he added. âSo from that viewpoint, pre-season suddenly becomes very important for these young players. âTo begin with, we have a very hectic schedule, playing in the Peace Cup out in Korea â so there are plenty of games and there will be plenty of chances in the close season for those that show they deserve them. âIf the younger players donât get an opportunity now then they will certainly get a great opportunity in pre-season.â ?
We should definitely get him out on loan next year. I've seen nothing to suggest he'll ever be a premier league centre forward and in all honesty it was a shocking buy from Bruce. He should have been playing week in week out in the football league this year to see if he could improve
Does anybody know how long a contract he signed on for. We have had him for one year and if we send him out on loan for another he really needs to have at least another two left to make it worthwhile. I seem to recall that he has a clause that allows him to move on if somebody offers £10m for him - pretty pointless at the present time
I think he will come good, he is really young and needs some time, a 6 month loan would be a good idea.
Let him go on loan, and if he makes it, fine. If not,,well, **** happens, he will still be a wealthy young man.
I think the lad will come good once he is over his injury and gets an extended run in the side..I find it amazing that some of our fans have already written him off before he has really had a chance!
