Life-long Bristol City supporter claims club has dropped a brick.. By IanOnions A life-long Bristol City fan says he has waited patiently for more than ten years for the club to honour its pledge over its 'Buy-a-Brick' campaign - but claims nothing so far has materialised. The fan, who has asked for his name not to be disclosed, bought a brick in the early 1990s for £35 to help fund the rebuilding of the Fred Wedlock stand. In return for his money, he was promised his name and personal message on one of the bricks in the new stand. But he was told in a letter from the club's former chief executive Colin Sexstone that the rebuilding of the stand had been delayed. The fan has told the Post: "However, the promises that Bristol City FC made to supporters relating to their Buy-a-Brick campaign have been lost in the intervening years, such that supporters have not received what the club said they would provide in return for the £35 payment." He said he contacted the club again last year but nothing had come of his inquiry. He said: "I have waited very patiently for well over 10 years for Bristol City FC to honour what they said they would do all that time ago and I have now lost complete faith that Bristol City FC have any commitment at all to honour their original promise. "I am now so exasperated that I have resorted to approaching the press to raise the profile of this issue, hopefully to influence the club to actually now do something about this. "All I want is for the club to honour the original promise that they made to me, which was for my name and or message to be displayed in perpetuity on the external façade of their new stadium. "I would also now like some form of compensation for the extreme delay in Bristol City honouring their original commitment, which would ideally be in the form of full VIP treatment for me and one other person at a home match of my choice. "If Bristol City cannot or will not do one of the above, I would like my £35 returned to me with interest and compensation for the extreme disappointment of not receiving what I made payment for. "For me, this matter is nothing to do with anything other than the principle of an organisation fulfilling the promise they made to a supporter. "I want what the club said they would provide for my payment or I want my money back, plus interest and compensation." Bristol Sport chief executive Andrew Billingham said: "Everyone who purchased a brick has had their details included on a display that has been in the Dolman Exhibition Hall until it was remodelled over the summer. "This was taken as an interim measure whilst the redevelopment of the stadium was being finalised. "Now that the £45m rebuild is underway, the bricks will form a part of the new West Stand development, which will be completed in the summer of 2016. "We are looking to create a walkway for the purchased bricks along with a memorial area. "This will also act as a focal point for families and friends to gather and remember members of the Bristol sporting family." http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Life-l...-claims-club/story-27765890-detail/story.html
I always wondered what happened about the bricks, I hope somebody kept records and what about all of the people that died waiting?
Certainly concerning i remember the scheme well, another piss up in a brewery concern. They don't do themselves any favors do they.
I bought a brick so will be very interested in how this turns out I knew nothing about the Dolman Hall thing - no communication on that Perhaps the club should now write to everyone who bought a brick telling them of the plan
I also put money into the club in the mid 1990's when they offered shares....Only just remembered that. Wonder what happened to my £400 ?
My Dad & I also put money in to buy the shares. At that time we were promised a commemorative brick and I never heard anything else about it. I just wanted to ensure the club survived. My Dad passed away in 2001 and never saw the brick, or indeed anything material that the funds were used for other than keeping us in business.
"I would also now like some form of compensation for the extreme delay in Bristol City honouring their original commitment, which would ideally be in the form of full VIP treatment for me and one other person at a home match of my choice. This quote was interesting, what about everyone else that bought a brick, should they also get VIP treatment for this delay ? I think everyone should be given food vouchers that were promised with a season ticket. But he's probably trying to get some freebies going to the evil post.
I bought a few shares back in 1982. There was supposed to be some kind of role of honour on the wall somewhere (Dolman..?) of the people who invested but I never saw it (didn't look to be fair). Anyone know if it was there...?
Fred wedlock was a famed local folk singer, best known for his Oldest Swinger in Town song- Did see him live once and he was good entertainment. The stand was named after Billy Wedlock who captained England as well as City in the early part of the 1900's. A bit of research told me that Billy Wedlock, was Fred's grandfather and that Fred's uncle also played for City.Didnt know that previously, so I thought I would share
I was talking about 1982 when we went bust and reformed. There was no brick involved then but there was supposed o be some sort of plaque...
So did I. You been invited to the shareholders meeting in last few seasons? You know the meeting that SL scrapped because he owns the biggest piece of the pie. I think that was never a good decision on his part and stopped shareholders questioning his decision making.
No I haven't been invited to any s/holders meetings Red Hub. It's not about the £400 or the lack of invites, it just seems like the club took our money and then conveniently forgot all about us.
Did you know there is an engraved wooden plaque with the names of all shareholders engraved upon it? Was hung on the wall outside the old board room, probably in a skip somewhere now.
