Bristol City are trying to pull off an audacious bid to land Middlesbrough’s Britt Assombalonga, we can reveal.

The DR Congo striker, Boro’s record signing after they paid Nottingham Forest £15million for his signature in 2017, is unsettled at The Riverside and is believed to be keen on moving further south.

It is all over social media and sports websites

If SL and Ashton pull this out the bag we in for a fantastic second half of the season.
This is the type of striker I was talking about in the transfer thread.
Boro fans ain’t happy rather Pulis went instead <laugh>

Don’t do social media , mainly because most of what’s on there is nonsense.

I don’t see this has any validity personally, his wage demands would be well above what we would find acceptable.

Agreed, I can't believe this is likely - he must be on something like £40k a week at Boro, whereas our limit would likely be £25k - £30k, & that's before a transfer fee & Boro not wanting to sell to a rival.

Football can be funny though so watch this space - we were said to be after him when he was at Forest, so presumably our scouts are fans.

For this to happen, I would think someone has lined up one of our players for good money.

Agreed, if this happens , wait for at least one of our present players to leave for big money, Kelly most likely , possible Brownhill also .

Personally think none of it will happen this window.

In my usual way I like to question this kind of gossip and ask why at this late stage have we apparently become embroiled in a bid for a player who is unsettled at his current club? When I read things in the media that say things like he is unhappy with things at his current employer, or that he has not lived up to his previous price tag (Hogan in this case) it makes me wonder if the have a self attitude problem. He hasn't been getting the starts needed to prove his goal scoring ability and quite frankly this is either the very positive signing that we have been talking about for years, or the dud of the year.

There's a sneaking doubt lingering around me that it won't happen anyway and his probable wage demand scares the living sh## out of me and may be the deal breaker. Something I have never said before is that maybe we just need to stick with the status quo and rely on Lee to rally his current squad to do the business.

On one hand, he could be the boost, to fire us up into the promise land or, with his big price tag and big wages, totally disrupt what we have got...Over to you Lee!!

Although I like to hear about my club apparently going for it I ask Lee to use caution on this one and when, and only when, he feels that this player will definitely benefit Bristol City in both the short and long term should he proceed. Think back to the days when we had a divided dressing room where some thought others were above, or below, them in the pecking order and the resultant fall out was not pleasant. Money can be the root of all evil and in the football business sometimes even worse when it becomes destructive and we don't need that with our current good form and attitudes.

Would we even want him and Fammy at the club? Surely it's one or the other? Not sure I'd like 1 of our 2 most expensive signings ever to be a backup!

If ,and that’s a big if, he is an option that’s a decision Lee has to make about any signing, granted the bigger the fee and wages the bigger the risk.

If it does go through, or something similar, the pressure for Lee to get us up increases , up until now there has always been the fact that he hasn’t been able to make these kind of purchases as an excuse, however that all changes , if or when this kind of deal goes through.

That said I’m still of the opinion this won’t happen.

As we all know Lee stated that he needed 3 transfer windows to get Bristol City to his, and apparently our, satisfaction and we are all well aware that he has exceeded that remit. However I would agree that despite some minor stumbles along the way we are no doubt better than when he arrived and yet we still haven't reached the pinnacle at the end of the season that we all really want. This has to be be his final chance to settle his arguments once and for all when it comes down to the team he wants to achieve all our goals, and yet I feel that if he can get us to the playoffs, or better, then he will be given another contract extension. I would have no problem with him sticking around as long as it does not include a major tear down of what he has built and yet another 3-5 year rebuild. Lee knows all of what I have said and he must be wondering if it will all work out for him and Bristol City. and I for one certainly hopes it does for all concerned.

Theoretically there could be opportunity for both to get game time, though in reality yes, one would be number one choice and the other number two.

I think there's no doubt that in simple terms, having a player like Assombalonga would make us stronger, but Diedhiou's hardly done much wrong to suddenly become a squad player, so would a £10m+ deal, plus high wages represent good value? Of course, if it's the difference between promotion or not, it'd be peanuts by comparison, but we've seen too many examples of teams that have bet the house on red and lost - we need to make sure that the sums add up whatever division we end up in next season.
