I was quite decent at darts in my early 20's, trouble was they wouldn't keep the pub open long enough for me to become truly dedicated to the game/sport <laugh>

I didnt say that, it just bears absolutely no comparison with Archery!

Archery has roots in history and has been a feature of the Olympics for years and years. It's not a popular sport of one that gets much media attention and headlines, not is it glammed up for the TV in the way that darts is but it absolutley does have a place in the olympics by right

Agree that archery has a place in the Olympics due to its history.

As a fan of most sports I am really looking forward to the Olympics and football is a very popular sport so I see no reason why it shouldn't be in there.

right, so lets get this straight. one is a sport that you stand a certain distance away from a target, which you have to aim a object to hit a certain area of the target and get soembody else to retrieve the said object. that one should be allowed in the olympics!

and the other one is a sport that you stand a certain distance away from a target, which you have to aim a object to hit a certain area of the target. while making the effort to retrieve the object you have just aimed at the target and that one shouldn't be allowed in the olympics!

so can you tell me again, why archery and not darts be allowed in the olympics?

Maybe historical reasons, that archery would have been a prized skill for many centruries, and pissed up people throwing tiny arrows in pubs was not really considered. (not saying that darts players lack skill)

Darts....you stand 8 foot from the target (please correct that if it's incorrect) and you get three goes per turn, you very rarely see the centre of the target hit, even after all those goes. There are NO exterior influences effecting the flight of a dart. There is no depth of history in this game that qualifies it for the Olympics. It's a pub game same as skittles. No wars have been won using this game! You cannot hunt or catch food using the equipment. Anyone can pick up a dart and throw it at the board. It does not require special skill or strength.

Archery.....You stand anything from 20metres to 30 metres away from the target(same as above) you fire one arrow in sequence with your opponent AND you try to hit the centre of the target, which happens very frequently, the arrow can be effected by the prevailing weather conditions. Archery is embedded in the history of our country, wars have been won by using this skill. Plus if required you can use this skill and equipment to hunt and catch food! You need to train for a long time to use a longbow, you cannot just pick one up and use it effectively, it requires massive strength to pull back the cord and flex the bow.
Would you like me to carry on, bearing in mind I am supposed to be working.

Back to the original post (which was a great post by the way). I think Beckham in his prime was one player who showed that extra bit of energy, passion and commitment which brought England through certain games. For that alone, he should be considered something of a role model. On the other hand now that he is past his prime, I doubt his desire to play in the Olympics is about representing his country its far more likely to about the Beckham Marketing Machine which has made him and Posh mega rich with endorsements. Any true patriot would want the best team possible to represent GB. As a result I think there are better choices than Beckham, Giggs or Bellamy.

Its evident that team GB has sold out with their selection (at least with football), but hey so have the Olympics with their many dubious sponsors.
