Brisbane, yes we were... you can't argue with the league you are in... Swansea are a Premier League team because that is what their football deserves, we were a L1 team because that is what our football deserved...... soon we will be a Championship team because that is what our football this season deserved :)

BTW... well done to all at Swansea for the superb football you are playing <ok>

Good question KC and one worthy of a more considered answer than I can give after three glasses of champagne - so here's the slightly p*ssed answer -

No, I don't think so. As good as this new board were in writing off our £7m debt, player purchases were funded by selling Carl Jenkinson to Arsenal for £1m+, somewhat of a windfall for a player who'd only completed eight League One games. No additional money was granted for player purchase, as far as we know.

To go straight through The Championship would take a superhuman feat with the squad that we've got, as good and as record-breaking as they are. The additional players needed to do that would cost money that we've haven't got and might land us back in the financial mire. We'll no doubt be looking for players out of contract, young up and coming players and some strategic loaners.

To buy big, we'd have to sell key players and that's not something I think any of us would contemplate seriously on this wonderful, exhilarating day.

    Cheers! <bubbly>

Thoughtful reply but leaves one main issue untouched.

As far as I know, we don't know who really owns our club. I have always assumed Slater and Jimenez are just the front men. I have always wondered if the real owners are Zaheel, the Arabs from Dubai, who were interested two years ago.

But whoever it is, it could be that they very sensibly gave Powell a limited budget to work with, to see if he could cut the mustard. Now they have their answer, they might loosen the purse strings a little. Even if they are only in it to develop players and sell them, our best players would devalue if they were playing in a struggling side, just as several players did under Pardew and Parkinson, only to enhance their value again once they moved on. And, of course, there is the question of enhancing the value of the whole club for possible resale.

So it just possible that £2 or £3 million might be found to buy three or four players to improve the side to at least challenge for the play-offs.

But if not, I agree that we will end up not much above the relegation struggle next season (finishing, say, 14th to 19th) and deep in it the following season once our promotion momentum has worn off. To avoid that, a couple of our bright juniors would need to really blossom and CP would need to pull a few more rabbits like Kermorgant out of his top hat.

The first half of the year I would have been more optimistic, but the second half of the season has really shown up our limitations. 10 out of 10 for team spirit and "grit" for sure. But only 7 out of 10 for class. That's good for Div One, but not good enough to challenge for promotion to the Premiership without significant reinforcements.
