Kim Bailey has had a rather quiet few weeks but I wonder whether Fubar might put a smile on his face in the Doncaster bumper? He has shown a decent level of ability in 3 bumpers but has a habit of "running into one" (Emitom, Nobby). That might well be the case today if Welsh Saint runs to anything like his pedigree suggests he could (full brother to Irish Saint) but at 4/1 Fubar looks worth an e/w bet to nothing and maybe the reverse forecast with Welsh Saint.
Has that line been set up for me to say ‘he’s had rather a quiet few decades’?!? But I’m not going to. No, no, no, no, no. NO! Big question of the day though must be has the 11th richest man in Wales started naming horses after himself?!? Reference that ‘lucky last’ at Doncaster. Re this one incidentally I see that The Lieutenant hasn’t had a Donny bumper winner since ’14 – 0/8 in this time.
Re trainer stats by the way. Can anyone tell me Alan King’s bumper record with horses making their debut (racecourse debut only no subsequent runs in bumpers) since 1 November 2018??? Can’t access the RP (or several other racing websites) at work.
OK. My only reason for asking was that apparently since the end of the ’18 Turf Flat season the old boy has shut up large stretches of his gallops, at Barbury, because he wants to protect them and make sure they are in pristine conditions in time for the ’19 Turf Flat season – not overused and all that. Another indication that he is desperate to become a fully fledged Flat trainer. One consequence of this is that he’s barely working (beyond routine canters) his bumper string prior to them hitting the racecourse. I just wondered what effect this had??? To some it won’t, of course, make a jot of difference (i.e. the less stuffy ones and if something runs in an weak bumper with no creditable opposition) but to others it should make an ‘eck of a difference as they are going into their opening bumper with very little experience of serious work – gun pressed to the head and all that.
This site is useless with mobile phone uploads. The King yard have very few bumper winners these days. 8 last year and 8 this year.
Brilliant. So by reckoning that’s 8/37. 22% - Very respectable actually and you’d say at first glance the move has had no effect whatsoever. A small overall LSP loss but nothing major. Guess he'll open all the gallops soon anyway (ahead of the start of term of 30 March) so the theory is pretty much obsolete in a matter of days! That big Cheltenham win would have been Glancing Queen in the big Listed mares race. Think she may go up against the old boy geldings next month.
I have had a bet on Battered for the Lincoln Handicap. He was/is double carpet for that race and Beckett had third in the Donny cavalry charge with Mitchum Swagger last year. Battered was with William Haggas and had been with Beckett for a fair while before his return to the racecourse. I suppose there is the possibilty of a bounce after a lengthy absence but the horse seemed progressive upped to a mile and I felt he ran well dropped back to 7F last time. The Racing Post figure gave Battered as running as well as he had ever done for Haggas on his first start for his new trainer and back to a mile today I am hoping he can upset the heavily tipped Matterhorn. The handicapper must surely start getting hold of the Johnston horse soon and I liked Battered at the same odds as yourself this morning. Hopefully he can win and enhance his Lincoln claims. I picked Battered and Martyn Meade's Chilean when the Lincoln weights were announced. Chilean started last season well, beating Study Of Man in France and the Pascal Bary colt went on to win the French Derby. Highly tried after that and supplemented for the St James Palace Stakes, it didn't pan out for Chilean but he ran in the Racing Post Trophy behind Saxon Warrior as a 2YO and now on 101, he is in the right range for a Lincoln contender and may just have a touch of class.
He’s ‘blue’ across the board right now, on Oddschecker’, for the ‘Dovecote’, what a lovely name for a race by the way, so my next guess would be he’ll go to Kempton on Saturday. Incidentally, re that meet will 'Endo step either Janika or Rather Be up to 3 miles??? And the breeding of that Shiskin in the 'lucky last' is truly incredible. Big recent purchase price as well.
