According to Red Issue, he will be named as our new captain, if this is true, then i support Louis Van Gaal's decision to give him the armband, my choice would be Robin van Persie.
On a serious note, do we really have a real leader in the squad now? RVP and Rooney doesn't seem like the leader types, and we've lost 4 former captains since the end of the season (assuming Evra is off to Juventus). Rooney and Fletcher I believe are our longest serving players I believe, and the next group of players would be Nani, Carrick, and Anderson. The only person out of that list that would even play a majority of our games will be Rooney and possibly Carrick. Just going through the squad as a whole there really aren't any stand out contenders. I know Phil Jones has been touted around as a future captain, but he hasn't done much to prove himself as a first choice CB yet either. I'm not a big fan of bringing in new players and making one of them captain right away, so is Rooney really our best option? It sadly looks like it.
Personally, I think it is important to have leaders on the field... but I don't think it makes much difference who the captain is. Leaders are not always the same thing as captain- the role is largely ceremonial and status related than an actual leadership role today. Back when we had Carragher- it's obvious he was the real "leader" of the team, even though Gerrard had the arm-band.
